So, you've got your enemy on the ropes (literally or figuratively) and you feel the need to really rub it in that you've won. Or, your enemy's got you on the ropes and it's time for desperate measures to turn things round. What should you do? In fiction, one option is the "Take That!" Kiss. (TV Tropes makes no guarantees for how well this works in Real Life, so Don't Try This at Home — or at least, don't come crying to us if you do and it fails or backfires.)
Whereas the "Take That!" Kiss is sometimes the most blatant expression of Foe Romance Subtext, it also can be the only thing in the characters' exchanges that suggests romantic interest at all. It will typically be more of a taunting/patronizing/desperate/tricksterish/arrogant domination display than a romantic/sexy come-on—though it's quite often played as an ironic version of a come-on, or possibly some kind of complicated double-bluff.
For related reasons, it's usually not a "Shut Up" Kiss, at least of the core variety that leads to two characters finally getting together, if only for a while, and no slapping need be involved, before or after. If there is UST or Belligerent Sexual Tension though, expect this trope to feature somewhere, at least as long as one of the parties is Genre Savvy enough to pick up on it.
The idea isn't necessarily specifically to mock or antagonize, though. It usually seems more like a non-verbal Take That!, though not always aggressive or hostile, and can be more of an affectionate sending-up or one-upping.
In effect, the "message" can range from "Try anything else, and I'll pull the plug on your career as well as make fun of you in public," (the Riget example, below) through "I'm not going to let your hostility stop my aggravating exuberance," (Bugs Bunny, Woody Woodpecker) to "So you just told a memorable fable about the problem of evil that explicitly challenges all I'm thought to stand for, and now you're expecting a counter-argument? Well, actually, I'm just going to do something ambiguous and non-verbal that will nonplus you and everybody else," (The Brothers Karamazov).
Though this is most commonly pulled by villain(ish) characters, it can also be done by a Designated Hero, or (as in the Heathers and Riget examples) by characters whose morality tends to the ambiguous. Examples of full-on good characters doing this are more rare—but see The Brothers Karamazov examples.
If that all seems a lot to read into an ambiguous and often completely non-verbal act, that hopefully just proves the point, but feel free to intone Bellisario's Maxim if desired.
A common variant is for a character to kiss someone as a Take That! to some third party. The message here is typically, "No, I'm not into you, and I'll prove it by randomly kissing whoever happens to be available because I'd rather have anyone else but you." Alternately, it could be part of an Operation: Jealousy, sending the message "If you don't make your move, you'll have to watch me mack on some other lucky bastard", or "You better make your move on them before someone like me takes them".
Blowing kisses can be a way of achieving a similar, if milder, mocking effect at a safe(r) distance. Compare Terms of Endangerment.
See also the more metaphorical type of Kiss of Death, which is rather stronger than just saying Take That!. Also compare and contrast Kiss of Distraction, where the intent is not to taunt but to confuse.
Examples:
- Berserk:
- Griffith/Femto gives Casca a Forceful Kiss just before brutally raping her. Normally, it would be whether a kiss in the process of a rape counts as this trope, but since the only point of this horrific Kick the Dog moment was to spite Casca and Guts before killing them, you could read the whole ordeal as a particularly evil Take That!. He also tongue kisses her while raping her from behind.
- When Guts fights Slan at Qliphoth, after a long and vicious battle, which included getting molested by her, he finally manages to impale her with his sword, seemingly defeating her. Instead, she lets out a laugh while taking great pleasure in the pain Guts is causing her, and grabs his face and quickly kisses him while calling him wonderful.
- Dragon Ball Z: Sort of played with in the aftermath of the first encounter with Androids 17 & 18. After the two wipe the floor with all the Z fighters except for Krillin, 18 goes over to the terrified Krillin and gives him a kiss on the cheek. While it was pretty much a mocking gesture (Krillin was the only one who didn't fight) it was the start of a relationship that would eventually see the two of them marry in the future.
- Nakago to Tamahome in Fushigi Yuugi. Yep. You read that right.
- And that was in reference to the one Nakago previously gave Miaka, too.
- Future Diary:
- Tsubaki Kasugano plants one of these on Yukiteru when she thinks she's defeated him and Yuno. Unfortunately for her, Yuno doesn't like that one bit.
- Later, Akise gives one to Yukki, partly out of love, partly to piss Yuno off. It worked. Maybe too well.
- Hana-Kimi: While the school doctor Umeda is lecturing the main character Mizuki's homophobic older brother on why he's being unreasonable towards his sister, he grabs him by the neck tie and kisses him (as the author put it) "Just to piss him off".
- In the manga of Hellsing as well as in Ultimate, Pip repeatedly tries to sneak a kiss from Seras Victoria. Usually to disastrous results. But then, during the siege of Hellsing manor, he's mortally wounded (riddled with shrapnel and run through by a scythe), Seras is horrifically injured (missing her arm and both eyes), and he's able to sneak in one first, and last, kiss before he dies... and then proceeds to bust out laughing that he finally did it, before offering his blood to her so she could heal up, become a full vampire, and avenge the Wild Geese (as well as just about everyone in London). It was not an insult to Seras but to the certainty of death.
- Itazura Na Kiss: Naoki kisses Kotoko mostly to get back at her after she publicly humiliated him with his childhood photo, which she did after he publicly ridiculed her feelings for him. Another reason is that she declared she would give up on him and he doesn't like to hear that.
Kotoko: I'm going to forget you and attend college...
Naoki: Then, go ahead and try. (kisses her) - JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Done by proxy in the first part, where Dio steals Jonathan's beloved's First Kiss to get one over on him. It backfires, as she proceeds to insult him by washing her mouth out with filthy water — the implication being he's so disgusting she doesn't want to pollute the nearby stream. He snaps, backhands her (which causes his cronies to abandon him in disgust), and ultimately this causes him far more pain than it does Jonathan.
- Monster Rancher: In episode 44 "Magical Stone Mayhem", Lilim almost kills Holly and Tiger, steals the magic stone, and almost kills the searchers (by having the army of robots shoot them to death). As she's leaving, Genki grabs on to her legs while she's flying away — only for her to kick him down. He falls 30 feet only to be saved at the last second. Lilim tells him "Thanks again," blows a flirtatious kiss, and then flies off. Also in the same episode after she steals the magic stone from Holly, she gives it a kiss - so in a way it's kind of a "Take That" kiss by kissing the stone and then mockingly telling Holly "thanks". In the uncut version of episode 45, she betrays General Durahan and kills his crew and collection of monsters. After a hard battle, she ambushes him from behind and steals the magic stone again. Before leaving, she blows him a goodbye kiss. It's safe to say Lilim loves this trope so much she'd probably give it a kiss.
- Naruto: The titular character experiences a few of these.
- One occurred Naruto was having a friendly fight against the (soon to be) fifth Hokage, Tsunade. Although Naruto managed to use his brand new technique, Tsunade almost instantly has him against the ropes. When Naruto awaits an earth-shattering punch, he instead has his efforts rewarded with a kiss on the forehead.
- Fūka puts Naruto on the ropes when she shows up in several filler episodes and puts on a faux flirtatious attitude with him, constantly flirting with Double Entendres. She tries to end their fight numerous times with a Kiss of Death that sucks out his chakra, and she successfully kisses him three times but is always thwarted before she can completely drain him of his chakra. The best example of this though is their second kiss, where after Fūka finally manages to catch Naruto by turning his legs to stone, she continues to act in a fake loving manner just to taunt how helpless he is, suggesting they kiss and make up before claiming she'll take his soul as payment for it. With him unable to resist her, she takes a moment to cuddle with him, cupping him by the face and chin and forcing him to look into her eyes as a mock romantic Held Gaze between them, with him glaring at her in defiance while sweating out of fear of what she will do to him while she smirks smugly and giggles at him, until she finally whispers her technique, leans in slowly with puckered lips and forcibly locks lips with him.
- Ironically, her first kiss with Naruto is more of him doing it to her. Naruto tricked her into kissing one of his Shadow Clones, which not only let him survive but since Naruto can share the experience his clone feels he was able to feel what a kiss with Fūka was like, essentially stealing a real kiss from her, and mockingly blows her a kiss himself while saying it actually wasn't bad, much to her anger.
- In Negima! Magister Negi Magi's rushed anime, Yue Ayase pulls a fast one in front of Nodoka Miyazaki at the end of the 24th episode.
- Noir: In the episode where Mireille and Kirika have to confront "The Intoccabile" — a woman whom the normally unflappable Mireille has been terrified of since childhood — the Intoccabile comes and speaks to Mireille herself to rub in the fact that Mireille is powerless against her because of her fear. She backs her into a balcony railing and then forces a kiss on her. Mireille tries to punch her, but the Intoccabile just catches her arm. She leaves unharmed, leaving poor Mireille feeling even more powerless than ever, which of course was the whole idea.
- Peach Girl: Sae is constantly attempting these on Toji, as a way to one up Momo.
- As a way to get Sae to back off, Momo grabs Touji and plants a kiss on him in front of Sae, while glaring at Sae and declaring that Touji is hers.
- Prison School: Hana forcibly takes Kiyoshi's first kiss. It backfires horribly on her.
- School Days: In the final episode, Makoto and Kotonoha do this in order to stick it to Sekai. Needless to say, things get worse.
- Seraph of the End has a variation, a Take That! Bite. In chapter 46 Ferid drives up in his car and holds out his hand to Mika and Yuu, with a flirtatious look and teasingly saying "I heard you two were being attacked by a dangerous vampire so I came to your rescue. Come take a ride with me. I'll save you." He plays mind games with Yuu and Mika throughout the chapter, and when Yuu turns into a demon to attack Ferid for showing them Akane's head Ferid tells Mika he's "worried for the poor guy (Yuu)" because he's says Yuu could turn into a full demon. He states he has an antidote to cure Yuu and tells Shinoa "Let us go rescue dear Yuu." Mika is adamant to keep Ferid from getting near Yuu and says "I won't let you have your way with him!" Ferid smiles and says he just wants to help Yuu. Mika says he's not going to let Ferid touch him. Crowley engages Mika in a fight while Ferid states cheerfully "Now precious Yuu is all mine." Ferid approaches Yuu and blushes saying "Wow! Haven't you grown into the cute one!! Your demon is on the verge of rampage yet you still have such clear and beautiful eyes. No wonder you are the extra special guinea pig." He then lifts Yuu's face by his chin and gets close saying "Perhaps before I heal you I'll take a little sip of your blood." Yuu asks if there's something in it for him if he allows Ferid to suck his blood. Ferid says he got the curse suppressant from Guren and it's the same one he takes. Yuu demands Ferid tells him everything he knows and Ferid smiles, covers Yuu's mouth with his hand, says "Oh, you are cute" and bites him while gripping his shoulder and hand. He then "cures" Yuu of his advancing demon curse while holding him close and leaning his head on Yuu's shoulder. This was done purely because he wanted to and to spite Mika, since in the series a vampire's bite is. of the Kiss of the Vampire variety.
- Tokyo Ghoul: After Kaneki and Touka escape Mutsuki who is deranged out of love for Kaneki and screams he'll kill Kaneki and Touka both (Touka because she's in the way and Kaneki because he rejected him for Touka) it leans toward this trope when Touka abruptly pins down Kaneki to kiss him and they proceed to have sex. It certainly felt like Touka wanted to make sure she and Kaneki sealed the deal romantically before Mutsuki could snatch him away and attempt to do the same. Them kissing and having sex is almost like them saying "screw you" in regards to Mutsuki for thinking he could come between them.
- Urusei Yatsura: In episode 113, Benten catches Ran in a leg lock after chasing her through the city. To make her let go, Ran kisses her on the mouth, which royally pisses her off.
- All-New Ultimates: Diamondback gave one to Miles Morales. There was a Running Gag later with the constant references to that kiss.
- Anderson: Psi-Division: After Anderson finds herself living out another person's life but fails to stop Judge Death's ascension to unstoppable killing machine, he kisses her with his rotting lips before she dies.
- One issue of Batgirl (2000) had Cassandra Cain do this to her father David after he had slapped her and in response she attacked and pinned him, she then planted one on him to show she had bested him leaving a kiss mark made from her blood on his mouth.
- Black Canary did this to Batman in Birds of Prey #90 to the amazement of her teammates.
Canary: It was like kissing Dracula but with less tongue.
- Hawkeye did this to Deathbird after defeating her. This went beyond his usual style, but she was an exceptionally dangerous opponent, and he defeated her by himself, and he hadn't had a fight like that in quite a while, so he was riding on exhilaration.
- Hawkeye has also been on the receiving end of one of these, courtesy of She-Hulk. He'd been messing with the newly recruited Avenger for a while now, and She-Hulk's response to his latest jabs was to forcibly pick him up, kiss him, and drop him on his ass. Even Clint admitted she's won that round.
- In Love and Rockets Maggie plants a Take That Kiss on Viv after an argument between them, partly over their rivalry over Ray. Viv gets into it for a few seconds before punching Maggie.
- In Lucifer, Mazikeen, having just saved the Council of Angels' bacon and still getting grief from them for being a) female and b) a demon, enlists a human admirer for a Take That Kiss:
Beatrice, I need your help in one more thing. Passion is blasphemy in this holy place. [Beat] And I have a powerful need to blaspheme.
- In Spawn #97 after Angela provokes Spawn he prepares to attack her only for her to kiss him, he asks why she did that, she replies because it was the last thing he'd expect from her.
- Shriek did this to Spider-Man on one occasion after she beat him up then sucked out his energy.
- In a similar case, Queen wanted Spider-Man as her mate and after defeating him, caught him in a hug and flirted with him saying he shouldn't feel bad for losing to her because he could have never beaten her before forcing a big wet kiss on him. She kissed him again while she had him captive and didn't take his resistance well. It turns out her kiss was slowly mutating him into a giant spider, which she would have full control of and he would serve as her egg sac to give birth to her offsprings.
- In X-Men, Beast, Nightcrawler, and Rogue have all been known to kiss people in the midst of combat. In Rogue's case, this is a method of attack, since her touch drains the victim, but since any skin to skin contact works, using a kiss is just her being cheeky about it.
- In Young Avengers, Hulkling once dealt with a bigot spouting biblical quotes about the evils of sodomy by kissing him.
- Peanuts: Snoopy sometimes gives one to Lucy to interrupt her dogs-should-not-do-that rants.
- The January 6, 1988 strip of U.S. Acres had Booker grab hold of a worm and ask what the worm was going to do now. The worm promptly kisses Booker and flees while Booker is rubbing his face in disgust.

- Cheerilee's Garden contains two instances of this in its third chapter, both performed on Twilight by Cheerilee: the first, during the conversation between the two before Cheerilee begins torturing Twilight to death, and the second during Twilight's final moments (during which Cheerilee becomes more and more passionate as she feels her victim's life slipping away; for added disturbance value, it's even implied that Twilight's death gives her an orgasm).
- Danganronpa: In Harmony's Wake: In the fourth trial, Monoponi "congratulates" Diamond Tiara for making a correct assumption about the smoke detectors by cupping her cheeks and telling her he could kiss her. The thought of this causes Diamond Tiara to vomit behind her podium at the idea, and several of the other passengers are also disgusted at the thought. Monoponi just laughs at this reaction though, this clearly being what he wanted. This gets a Call-Back in the final trial when, the Mastermind, Cozy Glow, mockingly says she thought she and Diamond Tiara were getting along. She then reminds her that they never got to kiss, and mockingly flirts with her, asking her if she wants to "make up for lost time" before puckering up and making kissing noises at her. Diamond Tara just covers her mouth to stop from throwing up again and begs her no, to which Cozy just shrugs and says it is Tiara's loss.
- Down And Out: When Grace jokes that Simon must have had a crush on her while destroying his novel, he admits he once was in love with her. The confession is bitter for the both of them, and Grace decides to kiss Simon not out of love or passion, but as a cruel reminder that they've lost the chance for that sort of relationship.
- In Dumbledore's Army and the Year of Darkness, Neville kisses Draco to humiliate him.
- Similarly, in another Potter fanfiction, While Draco is taunting Harry for being predictable and a wimp, Harry kisses him in a combination of a "Shut Up" Kiss and Take That Kiss to, what else? Shut him up and piss him off.
- The Flash Sentry Chronicles: Sunset forces a deep kiss on Flash, stunning him. - The Naruto AU Kiss Me Deadly in revolves around this. The sick satisfaction of humiliating Naruto every day by forcing him to kiss someone he absolutely despises.

- Transformers Animated: Cybertronian Genesis: In the sequel, during the Siege of Polyhex, Megatron delivers a spiteful one to Blackarachnia in order to drive Optimus Prime into accepting his offer and joining the Decepticons (much to the disgust of everyone, including the likes of Lugnut and Blackarachnia herself). Optimus, who was only negotiating as a stalling tactic, enters Tranquil Fury mode as a result of seeing his Arch-Enemy kiss his One True Love, and drops the charade, instigating a Duel to the Death.
- In the The Legend of Zelda fic Wisdom and Courage, after successfully forcing Link to gather the Fused Shadow's pieces for her in exchange for Zelda's life, Veran decides to twist the knife even further by planting a kiss on Link right in front of Zelda for the sole purpose of torturing them both.

- Batman & Robin: When Pamela Isley becomes Poison Ivy, one of the first things she does is take revenge on her old boss Dr. Woodrue this way. Woodrue previously tried to kill her for discovering what he was doing with her research and refusal to join him. Once she emerges he is infatuated with her new beauty and she slowly brings him in for a deep kiss, which he immediately returns, only to tell him afterwards her lips are filled with venom. As Woodrue slowly chokes to death, Ivy mockingly states she "probably should have mentioned that earlier" and taps him on the forehead, causing him to collapse backwards dead.
- Poison Ivy also spends a majority of the film seducing Robin, tricking him into thinking she loves him and breaking his bond with Batman. Eventually, she gets him alone in her lair and finally manages to share a poison kiss with him, under the guise of wishing "her love" luck against Mr.Freeze. She reveals her true colors after the kiss, telling Robin it is time to die in mock sadness. But it was actually Robin who pulled this off, not Ivy. Robin was wearing rubber lips to protect himself from her poison. He finally saw through her seductions and was pretending to still be blindingly in love with her, until he was able to see if she could be trusted. He tricked her into revealing her plan and just stayed long enough to keep playing the "love-struck-sidekick" role and share one kiss with his crush like he wanted. He reveals this by removing his rubber lips as Ivy stares in horror, realizing the sidekick she had been seducing had managed to outsmart her and steal a kiss from her.
Poison Ivy: One kiss...my love (whisper) for luck.
(Robin and Ivy lean in, with Ivy smirking evilly, and share a romantic, passionate kiss)
Poison Ivy: (rubs noses with Robin and speaks in mock "sadness") Bad luck I'm afraid. (strokes his chin lovingly) Time to die, little Robin. (smirks at him)
Robin: I hate to disappoint you but... (peels off his rubber lips) rubber lips are immune to your charms.
(Poison Ivy stares in horror before turning a Death Glare upon him for stealing a kiss from her).

- Chase plants one on Caleb in The Covenant for a rarer male on male example. Considering the most memorable moments in the movie consist of Ho Yay, Foe Romance Subtext and boys in too small speedos, it's not really surprising.
- Subverted in Daredevil (2003). As he is about to gut her with her own sai, Bullseye attempts to give Elektra a kiss before doing so. She keeps pushing him and moving him away and as soon as he's close enough to do so, he instead guts her. It follows through in the Director's Cut, while she's in the air with the sai in her gut, Bullseye delightfully succeeds in giving her a kiss.

- In book 3 of J.R. Ward's vampiric erotica series The Black Dagger Brotherhood, there is a venomous exchange of words between Handicapped Badass, Phury, and another male vampire called the Reverend, about the titular brotherhood. The heated back-and-forth at last comes to a head when the Reverend insinuates rather blatantly (and very derogatorily) that Phury maintains his celibacy because he is actually gay. Phury responds by planting a kiss on the guy that is described as being akin to a "punch between faces." Needless to say, many readers were thrilled at his ironic rebuttal to the accusation.
- Books of Bayern : Selia does this to Isi in Forest-Born, "like a girl kissing her favorite doll."
- As indicated above, The Brothers Karamazov has both Christ's kiss to the Great Inquisitor and the kiss Alyosha, inspired by it, plants on Ivan (who responds "That's plagiarism. But thank you.")

Mom: Whatever you say, love.
(Emily walks over and kisses the hell out of her girlfriend, then leaves)
Mom: (biting her tongue) I-I'm gonna finish emptying the car.
