"O pitiful shadow lost in the darkness, O evil spirit born of those drifting between heaven and earth, may the thunderous power from the garments of these holy, delicate maidens strike down upon you with great vengeance and furious anger, shattering your loathsome impurity and returning you from whence you came!
REPENT, YOU MOTHERFUCKER!"
Panty and Stocking

The angelic Anarchy sisters have been exiled from Heaven for their less-than-heavenly behavior. Struck down to Daten City, located on the border of Heaven and Earth, the two sisters, Panty (Arisa Ogasawara) — an incredibly promiscuous blonde who can turn her panties into guns — and Stocking (Mariya Ise) — a goth girl with an eternal craving for sweets who can turn her stockings into swords — must buy their way back into Heaven by killing ghosts, the evil, corrupted spirits of man that have been plaguing Daten City. Aided by their immortal dog-like thing Chuck (Takashi Nakamura) and guided by Father Garterbelt (Kouji Ishii), a black priest with a titanic afro and a variety of sexual fetishes, the sisters fight ghosts in sexy, exciting, and just plain old weird ways.

In other words, you're watching a typical Studio Gainax anime.

2010's Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt mixes a raunchy sense of humor that wouldn't be out of place among any [adult swim] programming with director Hiroyuki Imaishi's trademark sense of slick style and blistering, over-the-top action. The show was created as an obvious homage to western cartoons (the story goes that much of the production crew of Imaishi's previous show watched an episode of Drawn Together while drunk and pondered what was stopping Japan from making a show like that), from its Powerpuff Girls-esque Thick-Line Animation art style, Two Shorts format, and western-styled Episode Title Cards and 30-second long opening theme tune. Coupled with an eclectic pop and electro-house soundtrack primarily produced by TCY Force and ☆Taku Takahashi, Panty & Stocking stands out as likely the weirdest, kookiest, most out there series to ever come out of Gainax (which is saying an awful lot).

In 2012, Funimation licensed the series for North America, streaming it on their website before releasing it on both DVD and Blu-ray. Starring Jamie Marchi, Monica Rial, and Christopher Sabat as the titular three, the English dub rather liberally translates the dialogue into something that manages to be even more raunchy, vulgar, and denser on the jokes than the original Japanese script — and considering the show's obscene subject matter and aforementioned western cartoon influence, it certainly works to its benefit.

After its obligatory Gainax Ending, the series teased a second season, but Hiroyuki Imaishi left Gainax in 2011 to form Studio TRIGGER, bringing much of the show's production staff with him and leaving the series in limbo. In January 2017, Imaishi and other ex-Gainax staff released a doujin titled Geek Boy Homecoming that serves as a sequel to both Panty & Stocking and another series. In 2021, copyright notices for an Imaishi mueseum exhibit suggested that TRIGGER had obtained ownership of the IP at some point prior (which they confirmed during Anime Expo 2023), and after over a decade of waiting, "NEW PANTY AND STOCKING" was formally announced to be in production by Studio TRIGGER at their 2022 Anime Expo panel. Check out the teaser here.

The series has received two different manga adaptations: Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, which is written by Studio Gainax and illustrated by Tagro, and Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt in Manga Strip, which is written and illustrated by Imaishi.

You can watch the show it in its entirety on Funimation's own website and Crunchyroll.

This anime features examples of:

    open/close all folders

    Tropes # to M
  • 11th-Hour Superpower: Chuck gains one in "Bitch Girls: 2 Girls".
  • Absurdly-Long Limousine: Scanty and Kneesocks' demonic SUV-limo stretches for as long as the anime is absurd. Doesn't stop it from pushing up staircases and through windows.
  • Absurdly Powerful Student Council: The Mayor's daughters take over the school in "Les Diaboliques", and before that, Barby the Queen Bee Ghost had the whole school at her feet before Panty and Stocking came along. The weird thing is that despite all these girls only being incredibly popular, they seem to have actual power over the school's RRRUUUUUUUUUURRRUs.
  • Absurdly Sharp Blade: Justified in that while Stocking's katana can slice through an entire demon-possessed semi-truck, Stocking still needs to manually sharpen her blades with machinery, as seen in "High School Nudical". Also, it's "Angel Powered".
  • Absurdly-Spacious Sewer: Contains a ghost factory.
  • Accidental Hero: A running gag involves the girls accidentally rescuing bystanders from various plights.
  • Acid-Trip Dimension: The series resembles this.
  • Actor Allusion:
  • Aesop Amnesia: Brief points that out that Panty and Stocking have already had a "petty fighting gets you nowhere" plot, but that doesn't stop them from going into another all-out war on each other.
  • All Just a Dream: Subverted in "Trans-homers". At one point, Brief wakes up after a nap and thinks that the events of the episode were just a crazy nightmare. He is then reminded that it wasn't.
  • All There in the Manual: The names of Scanty and Kneesocks' weapons, Double Gold Lacytanga and Double Gold Spandex, respectively, only appear in their character bios on the website.
  • All Women Are Lustful:
    • In addition to Panty, there's Stocking, who gropes a bunch of cheerleaders' breasts, is repeatedly Too Kinky to Torture, and is definitely not averse to spontaneously striking poses for men standing by with cameras. Various conversations over the course of the series indicates that Stocking has almost as active a sex life as Panty.
    • Several minor female characters are shown to be randy.
    • The D-City Rock lyrics actually include the line "I'm breaking the news now boys, us girls, we're full time horny too."
  • Alpha Bitch:
    • Queen Barby in "The Turmoil of the Beehive" when Panty and Stocking infiltrate a high school. Unsurprisingly, she's a Ghost, a literal Queen Bee in fact.
    • Panty and Stocking themselves count; they're both rich and famous while being more than glad to walk all over almost everyone who worships them.
    • Scanty and Kneesocks when they take over the school.
  • Amen Break: The Amen Break is sampled in "Beverly Hills Cock".
  • And Then John Was a Zombie: No Stocking, you are the demons.
  • Animated Shock Comedy:
    • The show is all about being a homage to Western adult animation, with copious swearing and very strong sexual references, the main protagonist Panty notably wants to have sex with 1000 men, the main transformation sequence is a striptease, there's an episode on masturbation, and the priest Garterbelt is an Ephebophile, with everything played for comedy. The dubbed version was requested to be significantly more vulgar than the subbed version to the point where it was not allowed on Adult Swim.
    • Imaishi even says that they were watching Drawn Together while drunk and wondered why Japan couldn't make stuff like that.
  • Animesque: Zigzagged. It's an anime meant to look like an American cartoon in the style of the animesque The Powerpuff Girls (1998).
  • Anime Catholicism:
  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Despite the fact that Panty and Stocking know that angels exist (since they are angels), they discuss the probability of God's existence (page 89 of the manga)
  • Arc Welding: Episode 6, most likely. Episode 12 too.
  • Art Shift:
    • There are scenes drawn in a normal anime style every so often, most notably the Transformation Sequence.
    • So far there's been hard line Powerpuff Girls style (the main art), detailed anime art, stylized anime art, Super-Deformed Flash cartoon, and thick pencil sketching. Sometimes in rapid succession.
    • "Vomiting Point" spends almost its entirety in Little Tokyo, which is as depressing as it is realistically animated. Panty and Stocking stand out even more when they arrive to deal with the Ghost of the Week. To complete this, it was even animated by a completely different team than usual.
    • In "The Stripping", there are various moments where the art will turn back into the detailed anime art....just at the moments where the most fanservice opportunities are.
    • The monkey lawyer switches to a Fist of the North Star art style in "1 Angry Ghost".
    • "If the Angels Wore Swimsuits" features a shift to South Park's art style.
    • "Chuck to the Future" played with this a little: the first part is mostly done in Flash animation, the second part is done in CGI, and the third part is done in the series' traditional animation, except with palette mostly limited to black and shades of gray. Furthermore, there's the Rotoscoping in Part 1 as Chuck witnesses Garterbelt's hand picking up his message, and Panty and Stocking walking out of the kitchen.
    • During their final attack against the Big Bad at the end of the series, the two girls instantly morph from their usual Powerpuff Girls-inspired appearance to their fanservice-y detailed anime appearance.
  • Art-Style Dissonance: This is a tremendously bawdy series à la South Park drawn in a Powerpuff Girls-esque art style.
  • As You Know: Lampshaded by Kneesocks in "The Stripping". She explains to Scanty of their plot to ruin the world economy by sucking up all the people's money through gambling. She then mentions that even though Scanty already knew all this, she loves to hear herself say it out loud.
  • Ash Face: Happens to Panty in the beginning Episode 13 when she is struck by lightning.
  • The Atoner: The reason Garterbelt is a priest, trying to get Panty and Stocking on the right track.
  • Atop a Mountain of Corpses: Panty often sits atop a pile made by all the guys she has just screwed.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: In "The Diet Syndrome."
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other:
    • The ending of "Cat Fight Club" and "Ghost: The Phantom of Daten City," where Panty is legitimately worried for her sister. Although, the final episode kinda nullifies it.
    • Averted with Panty and Brief when, just after they've finally made love (and it really was implied to be that, rather than just sex), and Panty has a chance to save him, she flinches away from him in disgust because he's in dork mode.
  • Back-to-Back Badasses: When they can stop arguing for long enough to notice a Ghost, Panty and Stocking. They clean the house with gusto.
  • Badass Adorable: Both girls qualify; Stocking has a slight edge in adorable side while Panty has a slight edge in badass side.
  • Badass Crew: They become this, if you count Chuck, Garterbelt, ...and Brief.
  • Badass Boast: Panty delivers a rather nice one to Corset in "Bitch Girls".
  • Badass Creed: Panty and Stocking's chant, along with Scanty and Kneesocks':
Panty and Stocking: Oh pitiful shadow lost in the darkness. Oh evil spirit born of those drifting between Heaven and Earth. May the thunderous power from the garments of these holy delicate maidens strike down upon you with great vengeance and furious anger, shattering your loathsome impurity and returning you from whence you came. Repent, motherfucker!

Scanty and Kneesocks: Break, oh Earth. Dry up, oh sea. Burn out, oh sun. Grant us power, Earthly leaders and gatekeepers of Hell! Guide us, makers of the underworld! We are high-class Demon Commanders!
    Scanty: I'm Scanty!
Kneesocks: And I'm her darling little sister, Kneesocks!
  • Balloon Belly:
    • Taken to extremes with Stocking in "The Diet Syndrome", where her becoming massively fat is a plot point in the episode.
    • Happens to Brief in "Inner Brief", but on a much smaller scale. Thanks to Panty and Stocking shrinking, and then growing inside his stomach, his belly swells up and makes him look heavily pregnant.
    • And again in "Nothing to Room", where Panty and Stocking devour an insane amount of delivery food until they end up with exercise ball-sized bellies. They're even the trope's page image!
  • Barbie Doll Anatomy:
    • Panty in the first Sanitarybox short (Heroine Interview). She strips down from her baseball uniform, to her bra and panties, and finally, her featureless birthday suit.
    • Panty in "High School Nudical", though it's only for a split second you could notice. Also averted with her in the same episode, just a few moments before. Though not quite detailed, due to the art style of the show, her nipples are clearly visible. Also in the music video for "D City Rock" at the end of Episode 10.
    • Averted with the Sperm Ghosts, each of which have rather prominent testicles.
    • Averted in "Inner Brief", where we're briefly shown Brief's penis, which is just drawn as a rectangle.
  • Bare Midriffs Are Feminine: When they transform, Panty, Scanty and Kneesocks wear outfits that bare their midriffs. Thanks to the Art Shift, this helps to showcase their full figures and femininity, which the default art style downplays.
  • Bathroom Brawl: In "Les Diaboliques", Panty and Stocking get into an epic battle with Scanty and Kneesocks in the high school bathroom.
  • Beach Episode: "If the Angels Wore Swimsuits".
  • Beauty Is Never Tarnished:
    • Considering that Panty gets covered head-to-toe in poop in the very first episode... yeah, averted.
    • In "Les Diaboliques", such contamination is easily removed using a washcloth within seconds, however.
    • The more usual fight version of this is averted in "Les Diaboliques". Panty's face is first left with a large red mark in the middle of her face when Scanty punches her, then at the end of the fight her face has a few visible scratches. Panty's panties also leave an apparent burn on Scanty's face.
  • Behind a Stick: Panty and Stocking hide behind candlestands while tailing Garter to his bondage chamber.
  • Beleaguered Benefactor: Garterbelt constantly gripes how the Angel duo's Destructive Savior tendency to wreck the city to stop the Ghost of the Day causes collateral damage that he has to pay with his earthly cash. This habit eventually means the church they all live in starts falling apart due to Garterbelt not being able to afford repairs and the angels having to take jobs to earn money.
  • Bifurcated Weapon:
    • When Panty borrows Stocking's panties in "Les Diaboliques" and it turns into a second pistol, she can somehow combine the two to a submachine gun or a Sniper Rifle.
    • Scanty can combine both of her revolvers to form a shotgun. Also, the poster for "Season 2" shows her wielding a chainsaw instead of a type of gun, which may imply that the Angels and Demons' actually wield Morph Weapon(s).
    • Stocking can combine her swords handle-to-handle, spinning the result into a whirling blue disk of death.
  • Big Anime Eyes: Though it's a Studio Gainax production, and the series mostly adheres to this, it's pointedly averted in the episode "Vomiting Point." As Garterbelt succinctly describes it: "In this ghetto-shit place [Little Tokyo], ghetto-shit people seek ghetto-shit happiness as they live out their ghetto-shit lives." Reflective of their miserable existence, the people are drawn with tiny, mismatched eyes, bordering on gonk.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Panty marches straight up to where Corset and the Daemon sisters are holding Brief despite the fact she's no longer an angel.
    • Brief's rescue in Episode 12.
  • Big "OMG!":
    • Literally, as a written sound effect in "Nothing to Room".
    • Garterbelt does this twice in Episode 13, complete with a reverse "Oh my God!" when he gets resurrected.
  • Big "WHAT?!": When Panty discovers who her sister wants to date in "Ghost: The Phantom of Daten City".
  • Bigger Is Better in Bed: Panty thinks so. Subverted in Episode 12 after her hymen grows back. Brief's shotgun saved the day.
  • Bilingual Bonus:
    • In "The Turmoil of the Beehive", our protagonists receive 8 (hachi) Heavens. "Hachi" is also the Japanese word for "bee".
    • In "Trans-homers", Stocking comments on how the robots' power cores look like marshmallows. Femtron replies that it's their Guimauve, which is French for marshmallow.
    • Naturally, the heavy amounts of Gratuitous English flying around is this for the Japanese audience.
    • Oten in Oten City directly translates into penis in a fairly obscure Cebuano language.
  • Bittersweet Ending: In "Ghost: The Phantom of Daten City", Stocking falls in love with a repulsive and jerkass-ish Ghost and is willing to forsake her duties as an angel to be with him. It turns out he loves her too and proposes to her, but the moment she accepts, he ascends to heaven as he was doomed to walk the Earth forever until he could fall in love. Meditate, however, on the fact that Stocking returned to that very same Heaven in "Panty + Brief".
  • Bizarrchitecture: Daten City features a lot of it.
  • Black Comedy:
    • In "Catfight Club";
Stocking: Oh, by the way, I diddled him. I diddled him real hard. And he said I was the best FUCK he had ever had. Way better than you. Not that he should procreate, but I would totally have his abortion.
    • In the manga, there's a 9/11 joke where Panty and Stocking can't fly a plane so it hits Corset's mansion. He calls them terrorists in response.
  • Black-and-Gray Morality: There are definitely evil forces at work, but the protagonists are a pair of crass angels and a crude and lewd priest, respectively.
  • Black Comedy Rape: Happens a lot to Brief.
  • Bland-Name Product: "YouTobe"; WcDonald's; "20th Cherry Cox" and "Prickles" (Pringles) in the Sanitarybox shorts.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: Panty (blonde), Stocking (brunette), and Brief (redhead).
  • Bolt of Divine Retribution: In "Once Upon a Time in Garterbelt", God revives murdered crime boss Garterbelt and sends him out on a mission. However, after Garterbelt's Blasphemous Boast, God zaps him with a lightning bolt that turns his hair into the Funny Afro we all know and love.
  • Bondage Is Bad: Played straight by the mayor, averted by Garterbelt and foreshadowed by Stocking.
  • Book Ends: "Nothing to Room" begins and ends with Panty asking Stocking about some guy she met at a club.
  • Bottle Episode: Although there were some episodes before which were obviously produced on a smaller budget than others, Episode 11-B "Nothing to Room" trumps all. The episode only uses one single background image (with some minor modifications to depict different times of day), and the majority of the episode is just Panty and Stocking talking with each other and, eventually, Brief, while waiting for Garterbelt to serve them a meal.
  • Bottomless Magazines: Panty and Scanty's guns can be justified by being magical weapons, but the conventional guns they are using in "...of the Dead" don't have this excuse. Especially Garterbelt's; he fires his shotgun much more often than it should have shells loaded.
  • Breaking the Fellowship: Panty and Stocking are split up at the beginning of Episode 12-B, with Stocking accepted back into Heaven while Panty remains stuck on Earth. This becomes a major problem when Panty is attacked by Scanty and Kneesocks - she is barely able to hold them off alone, even before her powers begin to fail.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall:
    • Red Riding Hood and the Werewolf ghost in the dub of "Catfight Club" when they explode:
      Red: Can you believe-
Wolf: -I did both these voices?!
      Both: I'M A BADASS! [explodes]
    • In "...of the Dead," a zombie survivor does a typical "I'll draw them away" line. However, Panty doesn't even know he was there. He responds with "I've been here since Scene 19! I even had lines!"
    • In the manga, Garterbelt chastises them for talking about protein when they only got eight pages. When Stocking questions this, Panty notes that sometimes the first chapter is shorter.
  • Breath Weapon: Stocking's kitty plushy Honekoneko can shoot flames from its mouth. It does this to burn up the Demon sisters' deed to the beach (and a good chunk of Scanty's hair in the process) in "If Angels Wore Swimsuits".
  • Brick Joke:
    • In "The Turmoil of the Beehive", a teacher is preaching abstinence to a class of high schoolers. Then, in "Sex and the Daten City", Panty and Stocking are locating and destroying all the copies of a porno that Panty starred in, and they end up retrieving one of the tapes from that very same teacher.
    • In "...of the Dead", one of the locals accuses cops-of-the-day Panty and Stocking of being impostors because there are supposed to be three angels. After the pair go full angel mode, the same woman remarks "They're the real Charlie's Angels!"
    • In "Excretion Without Honor and Humanity", Panty solicits Garter's agreement that sex is good for people, and later, Stocking asks him if by "punishment" he means bondage. He responds "What would I get out of that?" In later episodes, he's frequently seen in bondage gear. Although the joke here is that Garterbelt is gay.
  • Brief Accent Imitation: Both Panty and Stocking mock Scanty and Kneesocks' penchant for rrrules in "Les Diaboliques".
  • Brother–Sister Incest: The Daemon sisters briefly engage in this in episode 12.
  • Brought Down to Normal: Happens to Panty in Episode 12.
  • Brutal Honesty: One of the problems the leaders of Heaven have with Panty and Stocking. While the people of Heaven lie to others to be polite, Panty and Stocking aren't afraid to say exactly what they think.
  • Buddy Snaps First: In the episode introducing the demon sisters, Scanty and Kneesocks, the two do everything they can to get on the anarchy sisters' nerves. While Stocking remains calm for the most part, Panty gets more and more agitated. As the Demon sisters call them fat, Panty gets ready to flip a table only for Stocking to beat her to it, having taken serious offense to being called fat.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer:
  • Bust-Contrast Duo:
    • First seen with the titular protagonists, the Anarchy sisters. Panty has an All Women Are Lustful attitude and is very extroverted but has a perky chest. Her sister Stocking instead, is more reserved and Does Not Like Men, but has a bigger chest than her sister.
    • Later seen with their Enemy Mine, Scanty and Kneesocks, having the same personalities between rivals but with inverted bodies: Scanty has a sexy attitude with a Hair-Trigger Temper and has a big bust, and Kneesocks being more reserved than her sister but more slender than her (and even more flat-chested than Panty).
  • Butt-Monkey:
    • Poor Brief. He can't get with Panty or prevent himself for getting embarrassed in a plethora of ways.
    • Poor Chuck is even more physically abused than Brief; repeatedly the target of hilarious and fatal injuries, to the point of complete corporeal destruction.
    • Fastener is revealed to be able to take about as much abuse from the Demon Sisters as Chuck does from the Angels, if not more.
    • Panty, of all people, became one in the last episodes, where she ends up getting separated from Stocking and Brief, loses her powers, gets kicked out of her own home and winds up getting straight-up killed by her own sister.
  • Buxom Beauty Standard: As much of a sex fiend that Panty is, Stocking takes pride in knowing that most of the men that she's had sex with comment that her large breasts are why they were attracted to her, and uses that as a counterpoint to one-up her sister.
  • Byronic Hero: If they didn't need to gather Heaven Coins, the Angels probably wouldn't lift a finger to help anyone.
  • Cain and Abel: In the very end.
  • Calling Your Attacks: During a beach volleyball game in "If the Angels Wore Swimsuits".
  • The Can Kicked Him: In "Excretion Without Honor and Humanity", Giant Brown attacks people while they're sitting on the can. Panty, too, gets dragged down the toilet.
  • Caps Lock, Num Lock, Missiles Lock: In "If Angels Wore Swimsuits", Scanty furiously slams her fist down on a button in the middle of their humvee. Kneesocks shouts out that she just pressed the self-destruct button, and the car blows up. An Ash Faced Kneesocks lampshades it afterward:
Kneesocks: What is the point of that button? Who would CHOOSE to use it?
  • Car Chase: Happens in "Death Race 2010" before it turns into a truck chase. It then turns into a train chase.
  • Car Fu: "Les Diaboliques" explain how defensive driving works for stuffed dogs.
  • Casting Gag:
  • Cat Fight:
    • Panty and Stocking have one in the aptly named "Catfight Club".
    • Panty and Scanty briefly have one in "Les Diaboliques" before returning to a shootout.
  • Catchphrase:
    • "We bid you adieu!" when the Daemon sisters make their getaway.
    • "Repent, MOTHERFUCKER!"
  • Censor Box:
    • Used in "The Runny" to cover Panty's naughty bits from the audience as she dangles from a Ghost's tentacle protuberance.
    • Used a few times, mostly in "Bitch Girls" during the Cold Turkeys Are Everywhere scene.
  • Changing Yourself For Love: After passing a good part of the series with a Does Not Like Men attitude, Stocking finally dropped all of that when she felt in love with an ugly devil that was also The Pig-Pen and had little to no interest on her. Stocking not just abandoned her cold attitude, she went like a highschooler in love, and in a date, even she went enterely of pink instead of black (but still in gothic lolita fashion), trying to impress him.
  • The Chew Toy: Chuck, so much so that he's page image.
  • Circumcision Angst: Panty rags on Brief for being uncircumcised, although she changes her tune when she gets a peek at his shotgun.
  • Clingy Aquatic Life: In "If the Angels Wore Swimsuits", the protagonists fall into the ocean naked and emerge covered with starfish and molluscs. It is implied that the sensation is a fetish for Panty.
  • Clip Show: "D.C. Confidential", the first half of Episode 12, although it serves a plot purpose.
  • Clipped-Wing Angel: At the beginning of "Les Diaboliques", there is a little Ghost who causes Panty and Stocking a lot of trouble by virtue of being agile and evasive before escaping. Then the Daemon sisters transform this Ghost into a giant, monstrous abomination, which is promptly killed in one shot by Panty and Stocking.
  • Clothing Damage:
    • The intro has a brief shot of Panty and Stocking doing a Team Power Walk in tattered clothing. Their brawl in "Catfight Club" also makes their outfits suffer.
    • Scanty and Kneesocks are particularly damaged at the end of "1 Angry Ghost".
    • Towards the end of the volleyball duel in "If Angels Wore Swimsuits".
  • Cluster F-Bomb: The English dub tries its hardest to put Black Lagoon to shame. Hell, it puts South Park to shame with all the profanity the dub throws in:
    • According to Jamie Marchi, Panty's English voice actress, all swearing was part of the Japanese directors' request to make the series as raunchy and vulgar as legally possible. Their reason? So the English dub can help teach the Japanese directors new swears and slang terms. For example, at the end of "The Turmoil of the Beehive", Panty asks who's face she's going to "rocking chair" first.
    • Panty says "Fuck" and variations there-of no less than 282 times over the course of the series. This includes two half-episodes where she barely even appears ("DC Confidential" and "Chuck to the Future"). Combined with the other characters in the show, the F-bomb total is somewhere around 360.
    • In the Japanese version, the girls (and Garterbelt) say profanities of all variations, especially "fuck".
  • Cold Turkeys Are Everywhere: In Episode 13, Panty lost her angelic status and regained her virginity as a side effect. Suddenly she notices lots of people making out in cars, then cats and dogs doing it, then a vortex of said animals and people having (censored) sex.
  • Comedic Sociopathy: One of the main points of the entire series is how everything is mainly played for laughs and just nobody gives a fuck about it all.
  • Comically Missing the Point:
    • In "Sex and the Daten City," Panty is concerned that her porn performance was bad. But that's not the point. The point is that the porn scandal could ruin the film project.
    • There's also this:
Panty: I'm not jumping into a shithole!
Ghost: Come on, don't be a bum, it's actually fun.
Panty: WHAT'S FUN ABOUT SLIDING DOWN A TOILET!?
Stocking: Just close your eyes and throw yourself into it. Pretend that it's watersports, you'll be fine.
    Panty: This is different!
Brief: Yeah, we don't have a jet ski or anything.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Happens in "Les Diaboliques", when a Ghost jumps into the toilet:
Panty: That's one place we don't wanna go.
Stocking: Speaking from experience, aren't we?
      Panty: Shut it.
    • Another one occurs when one of the villains calls Stocking obese, leading her to angrily declare that it was "episodes ago".
    • A subtle one, perhaps: in "Panty + Brief", there is a line chart detailing Panty and Stocking's productivity on killing Ghosts. Before their increase in activity as stated in the episode, there is a notable dip in the chart, possibly as a result of the lack of Ghosts seen in the previous two episodes.
    • "Once Upon a Time in Garterbelt" features a brief cameo of two Ghosts from the pre-release tie-in manga: the octopus-like Ghost who was stealing all the good lays from Panty, and the Giant Spider Ghost.
  • Contractual Immortality:
    • invoked Played with. More like contractual immunity. As per Word of God, the reason why Stocking never gets fat and Panty isn't riddled with every sexual disease known to man and then some, is because they are Angels. While on Earth, they are pretty much immune to anything that would alter their bodies such as food, aging, or illness. They have good reason to collect Heaven Coins and get back up into Heaven though, because they will eventually turn into regular humans if they were to stay down there too long, at which point their immunity no longer applies.
    • Played straight with Garterbelt. He can be killed, but will eventually come back to life until God himself decides that his mission on Earth has finally been completed.
  • Cool Car: The Anarchy sisters' pink open top Hummer ("See-Through"), and the Demon sisters' G-Wagen limousine (aptly named "G-String"). Both vehicles even manage to duke it out with each other in "Les Diaboliques".
  • Country Matters: Employed infrequently throughout parts of the series. "1 Angry Ghost" in particular counts as a Cluster "C" Bomb thanks to Tom Croose/Kneesocks.
  • Covered in Kisses: Panty does this to a ton of guys at her film's release party while having sex with all of them at the same time at the end of "Sex and the Daten City".
  • Cranial Eruption: After walking offscreen to confront Garterbelt about the food situation in "Nothing to Room", Stocking walks back into the scene sporting a knot that is equally the size of her head.
  • Crapsack World: Subverted with Daten City. With all the Ghosts attacking the city being lead by Noble Demons and the not-so-heroic Angels protecting the city causing just as much destruction, it's clear that it's not a very good place to live. Most of the civilians don't seem to be that bothered by it, though.
  • Crazy Enough to Work:
    • Panty believes she and Stocking can get back into Heaven by walking up a pole into space. Considering that the Big Bad tries someting similar, her plan might've worked... Maybe.
    • The Big Bad thinks he can use a giant penis-shaped Ghost to get into heaven.
      • Come the season finale, where the Big Bad actually almost makes it into heaven, in this show it's heavenly implied that heaven is a Fluffy Cloud Heaven in the skies. Or at least the clouds act as a portal to heaven.
  • Credits Gag: About 20 seconds in the opening credits, the letters PSG appear with a set of undergarments: panties, stockings and a garterbelt. Furthermore, at the end of the opening credits, the main characters drive over the series' title.
  • Cultural Cross-Reference: All over the place naturally.
  • Cute Little Fangs: The Daemon sisters occasionally have a snaggled fang sticking out just to emphasize that they're not good, but they turn cute whenever either of them are happy. For example, "...of the Dead" has Scanty sporting four fangs throughout almost the entire episode because she's completely elated that their plan is working so wonderfully.
  • Darkest Hour: The end of "Panty + Brief" - Stocking has ascended to Heaven, Panty has lost her powers and Corset has abducted Brief for the MacGuffin in his, er, possession.
  • A Day in the Limelight:
    • "Chuck to the Future", which takes place during "Pulp Addiction".
    • In "Once Upon a Time in Garterbelt", a glimpse of Garterbelt's past is revealed.
    • "Vomiting Point" centers around the ridiculously miserable life of Salaryman Terao. The main duo only show up in person near the end.
  • Dark Parody: The show is very vulgar and a lot of the jokes are to cross as many lines as possible while referencing a lot of western media which include high school movies, Transformers, Ghostbusters (1984), MTV songs, Saving Private Ryan, Romeo and Juliet and The Powerpuff Girls (1998).
  • Defeat Equals Explosion:
    • Every Ghost defeated by Panty and Stocking. When this happens, it cuts to a cheesy live-action model of the Ghost being blown up with pyrotechnics. This becomes a plot point in "1 Angry Ghost" when Panty and Stocking are on trial for murdering a ghost named Mr. Husband Petter. Their monkey defense attorney points out that the victim didn't explode as he would have if he had been killed by the Anarchy sisters, and that the marks on the body give away the real murderer as Mrs. Petter.
    • In episode 13, Garterbelt and Corset explode the same way when killed, with Garterbelt even un-exploding when he is brought back to life, complete with a reversed Death Cry Echo.
  • Deliberately Monochrome: The beginning of "Pulp Addiction".
  • Denser and Wackier: Compared to other Gainax series, this takes the cake for being the most wacky.
  • Deranged Animation: The character designers worked on Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Dead Leaves. That is all you need to know.
  • Destructive Saviour: Panty and Stocking, constantly.
  • Deus ex Machina: Pretty much literally in the 13th episode, where Corset appears to be defeated by the High Heel of God:
    Panty: Mom?
  • Deus Sex Machina: In "Panty + Brief", Panty mysteriously regains her virginity, resulting in losing her angel powers. Only by losing her virginity again, next episode, is she able to get her powers back.
  • Devil in Plain Sight: No one could tell that the sisters with the red skin, horns, and devil tails were demons? Even when they refer to themselves as the Daemon sisters?
  • Diet Episode: "The Diet Syndrome", for Stocking.
  • Dissonant Serenity: The ending credits consist of the girls being subjected to various forms of death, such as being sawn in half, running in front of a train, dying of dehydration in the desert and getting eaten by vultures, being buried alive, committing hari kiri (with Chuck's assistance), among other methods - all while keeping a smile on their faces. The ending theme itself is also fairly calm and serene.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Girls? Maybe you shouldn't be wearing such tight-fitting uniforms while guiding around traffic...
  • Dogged Nice Guy: Brief. For several episodes anyway.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?:
    • Scanty and Kneesocks get a very interesting scene in "D.C. Confidential" involving goat milk. And it's all silhouettes, which really doesn't help matters.
    • The art style of the soundtrack cover — especially the butterflies — recall the packaging for Glamorous Butterfly, a popular brand of condoms amongst the hip and young in Japan.
    • "Pulp Addiction" is a long chain of visual and verbal puns. This gets so explicit that the "hill" the marines are invaded has to be Censored.
  • Don't Explain the Joke: In the English dub of "Death Race 2010", Fast-But-Not-So-Furious is more talkative than in the Japanese version and repeatedly does the "and by that I mean..." type of explanation when he makes sexual innuendo. He even explains his usage of the term "pig" to refer to police officers. Stocking turns it around on him when it looks like he's finished, explaining Panty's "Ah, life in the fast lane; just makes you finish quicker" joke by saying "That means you're dead."
  • Double Entendre:
    • About 80% of Panty's dialogue is this. Nearly all of the rest is single entendre...
    • In the first episode, Garterbelt described his chili as "good black shit".
    • Panty and Oscar's mutual nose picking in "The Runny".
    • Garterbelt singing: "My frankfurter is big and black, My frankfurter is the tastiest in the world..." In the English dub, this is replaced by Garterbelt saying: "My wieners are all getting cold, where everyone at?"
  • Double Standard: Abuse, Female on Male: When not met with apathy, Brief usually winds up at the receiving end of Panty and Stocking's violent behavior. This is zigzagged a bit in that it's well-established that Panty and Stocking are antisocial good people and Brief isn't, so we're probably meant to sympathize with him rather than laughing at them.
  • Double Weapon: Stockings combines her two swords into one weapon in "Les Diaboliques".
  • Drop the Washtub: A part of Panty's Humiliation Conga.
  • Dual Wielding:
    • When the action gets really intense, Stocking takes off her second stocking to get a second katana. She can also spare a pair of her own panties so Panty can dual wield as well. Panty first does this in "Les Diaboliques", though Stocking has been dual wielding since the second episode.
    • Scanty and Kneesocks dual wield by default. Scanty wears two pairs of panties and Kneesocks removes both of her kneesocks so they can dual wield immediately.
  • Dustbin School: In "Les Diaboliques", the Daemon sisters become an Absurdly Powerful Student Council, and they soon demote Panty to the deepest sub-sub-basement classroom, about where a septic tank would be. There, Panty wallows in misery among geeks, loonies and morons while a derelict zombie struggles to teach ... something.
  • Dynamic Entry: Usually Brief is on the receiving end.
  • Eagleland: Daten City embodies Type 2 Eagleland...and is next to "Little Tokyo", with a color-shifted American flag featuring Blue and White stripes, and a field bearing the Japanese Rising Sun. Probably as a nod to the show being a Western Animation-style show made in Japan.
  • Eat the Evidence: Panty has Chuck eat all the copies of her porno.
  • Eldritch Abomination: The ultimate Ghost locked beneath the city's Hellsgate is a gigantic sea anemone/penis with gigantic tentacles at its base and head and caustic semen.
  • Elmuh Fudd Syndwome: The traffic reporter in the English dub of "Death Race 2010":
"Its an awarming case of woad wage!"
  • Embodiment of Vice: The fallen angels Panty and Stocking represent the sins of Lust and Gluttony, respectively.
  • The End of the World as We Know It: Which seems to happen in the end of "Panty + Brief".
  • The Ending Changes Everything: Stocking turns out to have been a demon all along and cuts Panty to bits, and Corset spontaneously comes back to life and sends all the remaining characters on a journey to collect all her pieces.
  • Episode of the Dead: The episode "... of the Dead" is about Panty and Stocking as Fair Cops going for a new Monster of the Week, which in this case converts all the population of Daten City into zombies, and with the only weapons they can find are... adult toys.
  • Episode Title Card: Done in the style of American cartoons, complete with who worked on the episode.
  • Erotic Eating:
    • By Stocking in "High School Nudical".
    • The Daemon sisters participate in this together in "D.C. Confidential", but it's also subverted: after the mayor walks in on them, they're shown covered in massive amounts of cream.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Despite trying to destroy the human race, the Daemon sisters frequently come off as being more morally upright than the Anarchy sisters. Case in point, they are shocked that Panty would let Brief die if it meant she and Stocking would be able to kill both of them. Scanty, in particular, is appalled that they wouldn't even bother to learn his name despite it all.
  • Even the Girls Want Her:
    • Stocking in "High School Nudical".
    • Panty in "The Runny".
  • Everybody Has Lots of Sex: Of course. Well, it takes a while for Brief.
  • Everything's Deader with Zombies: Apparently, Zombies > Angels, Demons, Ghosts. Who knew?
  • Evil Counterpart:
    • The Daemon sisters are the polar opposites of the Anarchy sisters in every way with similar powers. While Panty and Stocking are foul-mouthed chaotic angels, Scanty and Kneesocks are complete sticklers for rules and order. They even have a Team Pet named Fastener and their own evil black stretch SUV to complement Chuck and See Through, respectively. Fastener and Chuck also serve as the spare drivers of the team vehicles.
    • The mayor appears to be the evil counterpart of Garterbelt.
  • Evil, Inc.: The Daemon sisters purchased their Zombie Elixer from Publisher's Cursing House.
  • Evil Is Hammy:
    • In the English dub of "Death Race 2010", Fast But Not-So-Furious, the speed ghost, chews the scenery as much as he tears up the highway.
    • The Daemon sisters, especially when they start talking about the Rrrrrurus.
  • Evil Sounds Deep: Scanty and Kneesocks' Transformation Sequence is accompanied by a song with stereotypical deep-voiced female club vocals, whereas the vocals on Panty and Stocking's transformation theme are much higher-pitched.
  • Exploitation Film: Combines this with Grossout Show. There's some nudity and sex with lots of swearing all for the sake of Black Comedy and parodying American adult animation. Special mention goes to the dub in particular, which had as much swearing as they could possibly fit in at the request of the original Japanese producers.
  • Expressive Accessory: The stickers on the back of Brief's Proton Pack changes expressions and colors to reflect his mood. In "The Turmoil of the Beehive", it even changes mid-scene. When Brief gets blown up, his pack changes from a smiley face into an X to show that Brief is out of commission.
  • Expy:
    • Chuck is one of Gir. Jhonen Vasquez has noticed:
Vasquez: It's sort of like my own version of the Mr. Sparkle episode of The Simpsons.
    • In "Death Race 2010", the demon bears more than a passing resemblance to Carnage. It has red-tinted black skin, a jagged mouth, takes over multiple hosts, and is Ax-Crazy.
    • In "High School Nudical", Secret Speed Star bears a striking resemblance to The Flash.
    • Panty and Stocking are amazingly similar to the Flash versions of Kei and Yuri.
    • Ren & Stimpy have apparently died at some point, as they have two ghost representatives in "1 Angry Ghost". Possibly an Inspiration Nod, as the animation style, pace, and scatological humor appears to have been influenced by their cartoon.
      • The monkey lawyer in "1 Angry Ghost", once his brain gets electrified, turns into Phoenix Wright.
      • Tom Croose, the persecutor Kneesocks is wearing a disguise, looks quite similar to Frank T.J. Mackey from Magnolia.
    • Brief could totally be Lee Kanker's little brother.
    • That girl with the whip from "... of the Dead" bears a very strong resemblance to Marie Mjolnir.
    • Stocking has a striking resemblance to Bernkastel from Umineko: When They Cry.
      • Although, as most people have pointed out, she looks exactly like how a human version of Twilight Sparkle would look like. The same could be said for Panty, who looks a lot like Apple Jack.
  • Face Fault: Fat Stocking tries to kill the ghost that fattened her up in the first place, only to find out that her stocking is limp and all stretched out. Stocking thinks it must have shrunk in the wash, leading Panty to do a sliding face fault as she steps in to take care of the ghost herself.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Stocking, who was actually a demon.
  • Fan Disservice: invoked Rule of Sexy is Rule of Funny's bitch. And so you don't forget that, have some Squick.
  • Failed a Spot Check: In "Of the Dead..." Panty leads the survivors into a sex shop that she thinks is a gun shop, even though the clearly-labeled actual gun shop was right next door.
  • Fanservice: This series is so full of it, it would take days to list all the moments. But, for a single character, Panty definitely takes the crown of Ms. Fanservice.
  • "Fantastic Voyage" Plot: Panty and Stocking, after being slipped shrinking drugs by the Daemon sisters and getting fed up with Brief's weird tea parties in "Inner Brief", jump down his throat and stab and shoot him from inside for their amusement.
  • The Fat Episode: "The Diet Syndrome" has Stocking mysteriously gaining weight until she's twenty feet in diameter. Heretofore, Stocking could gorge herself on sugary confections with impunity. The culprit is a demon Lethal Chef that makes macaroons laced with evil microbes that multiply fatty tissue.
  • Five Rounds Rapid:
    • The strategy of the police in "Death Race 2010". Despite the amount of dakka they are employing, it's ineffective.
    • Panty tries this on the mass-produced Ghosts in "Les Diaboliques" with much more efficiency.
  • Flipping the Table: Stocking's reaction to the Daemon sisters calling her fat. This even takes Panty by surprise:
"WHO THE HELL ARE YOU CALLING FLESHY?!!! I GAVE UP FAT LIKE 10 GHOSTS AGO!!!"
  • Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: While both sisters are self-centered in a major way, Stocking does tend to take ghost hunting more seriously then Panty does.
  • Foreign Cuss Word: All over the place. It's to the point that citing every single example would probably produce a list as long as this page:
  • Foreshadowing:
    • There are actually some clues that Stocking is actually a demon:
      • Her passion for bondage which, as we know, is bad.
      • In "The Runny" saying how they should just use Panty's boogers, since it was already proven to work and there was no guarantee hers would.
      • She turns into the Megatron expy in "Trans-homers".
      • During the Gorillaz Art Shift in the music video clip in Episode 10, she impersonates Murdoc, who is a Satanist.
      • During one of their sister fights, she explains how clean and proper her room is compared to Panty's. The Daemon sisters' most well-known characteristic is that they enjoy rules and order.
      • On a different topic: Panty being very impressed by the gun she can make of Brief's undies may foreshadow that how she is not only perfectly fine with actually having sex with him, but also with "his gun being very big".
      • If Stocking truly is a demon, then that would explain why she got kicked out of heaven...
      • The twin towers as seen in Daten City? They're in the shape of stockings.
      • The OST of the series features a cover art oddly showing the Transformation Sequence versions of Panty and Stocking given the same red color as the Daemon sisters. On one hand, it appears to simply be a stylistic choice, or even a visual cue to their rather non-angelic behavior in the series. Then Stocking turns out to be a demon the whole time.
      • Garterbelt's first lines...
Garterbelt: Daten City, a town flinging to the threshold between heaven and hell. With a piece of its human inhabitants, it's regularly threatened by foul-tempered, evil spirits. A faded darkness lodged in the cracks of troubled souls will have struck this town today, unnoticed. However, there are some who wield a light beyond all human understanding, and ascend their stools of righteousness to eradicate those shadows bound by the bowels of Hell. But who could it be given the two that are eliminating this darkness? Are they servants of God, or minions of the devil?
    • In "Once Upon a Time in Gaterbelt", Garter's biography shows the mysterious tower that Heaven's been sending him throughout the years plastered everywhere. However, a side-by-side comparison shows that one with a purple G under it is broken, while a pristine one with a green B sits next to it. Garter's obsession with Brief's penis and these pictures indicate that Brief is now a candidate to be the key to Hell's gates.
    • When Panty and Stocking are stuck on how to collect 3 million dollars to repair the Church, the former suggests bullying a random rich guy for money. Immediately after saying this, Brief shows up.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus:
    • In "Death Race 2010", the train station that the ghost crashes into after getting defeated in truck form is called PENI STATION.
    • If you're diligent enough, you spot nearly every former Gainax protagonist in the backgrounds of "The Turmoil of the Beehive".
    • There are so, so, so many bonuses whenever civilians are shown. There are too many examples to list them all. For example, this random background character is something you likely would never had caught on unless you were to pause the episode and accidentally take note of it.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Panty (sanguine), Stocking (melancholic), Garterbelt (choleric), Brief (phlegmatic).
  • From a Single Cell: Chuck does this on a semi-regular basis.
  • From Bad to Worse: Episode 12.
  • G-Rated Sex:
  • Gag Haircut/Traumatic Haircut: Stocking gets something in between in the Sanitarybox segment "The Bad Hairdresser's Wife". It starts with a bit of gum in her hair from Panty...
  • Gag Penis: Brief. Panty getting her hymen regenerated may have something to do with it.
  • Gag Series: Big time.
  • Gainax Ending: If the final battle doesn't leave you yelling "What?!" in confusion, The Stinger will.
  • Gass Hole: The Ghost in "Ghost: The Phantom of Daten City" is one. Stocking seems to find it a turn-on.
  • Giant Enemy Crab: "If the Angels Wore Swimsuits" gives us a giant enemy crab ghost.
  • Giant Foot of Stomping: How Corset is defeated.
  • Giving Up the Ghost: Chuck's soul is hanging from his mouth as he dies from the insufferable heat in a sauna when Stocking goes on a diet in "The Diet Syndrome".
  • The Glorious War of Sisterly Rivalry: When Panty and Stocking aren't fighting ghosts, they are mostly fighting with each other.
  • Glove Snap: Garterbelt does this in "Inner Brief":
"Don't move or this is gonna hurt. [snap] Actually, this is gonna hurt either way."
  • Godiva Hair:
    • The female students and Panty in "High School Nudical".
    • This is used on the soundtrack cover.
    • This is used in "Help! We are Angels".
  • God Is Good: Always points in the right direction, giving clues via pieces of paper.
  • Gonk:
  • Good is Not Nice: One of the numerous reasons why the Daemon sisters find the Anarchy sisters so repulsive is because they show no regard for the safety of others, not even bothering to learn Brief's name when they threatened to kill him.
  • Gosh Darn It to Heck!: The Daemon sisters, in stark contrast to the Anarchy sisters, only ever swear once, and that's when the Mayor has transformed into his One-Winged Angel form and is busy literally creating Hell on Earth.
  • Goth: Stocking, the younger of the Anarchy sisters, is a pink and violet-haired gothic girl.
  • Gotta Catch 'Em All:
    • The Heaven coins.
    • If the ending is to be believed, the overarching plot of the second season will be gathering the 666 pieces of Panty.
  • Gratuitous English: Not just the profanities:
    • The ending song is sung entirely in English.
    • The background English jokes (like Peni Station) are abundant too.
    • The original Newtype article announcing the anime features a paragraph of pretty weird English that was also apparently slapdashily edited:
To be direct with you, the disaster that attaDATENcks-CITY is PANTY & STOCKING!
    • Scanty, Kneesocks, and Corset would imply that spouting gratuitous English is a hallmark of being a demon.
    • "If Angels Wore Swimsuits" has "CHARCH".
    • "Bitch Girls" has "EREKUCHION".
    • At the very end, when Stocking cuts through Panty with her sword, the sound effect is "SLIEC".
  • Gratuitous French: "CHOCOLAT" features some lines sung in French.
  • Gretzky Has the Ball: In a beach volleyball game against the Daemon sisters, the Anarchy sisters win 21-20. In beach volleyball, the winning team is the first to score 21 with a 2-point lead.
  • Grossout Show:
    • "Excretion Without Honor and Humanity" has our heroes fighting a poop ghost.
    • In "Pulp Addiction", semen is all over the place.
    • "The Runny" has nose picking and a ghost made entirely from vomit.
  • Growling Gut:
    • Panty's stomach can be heard groaning from gastrointestinal distress in "Excretion Without Honor and Humanity" while she's on the toilet, and taking a nasty dump.
    • Both Panty and Stocking's empty bellies roar for food in "Nothing to Room", which is followed by them ordering a ridiculous amount of takeout and stuffing themselves silly.
  • Gunpoint Banter: Panty and Scanty at one point in "Les Diaboliques".
  • Guns Akimbo: Panty and Scanty do it in "Les Diaboliques".
  • Gun Kata: Once again, Panty and Scanty in "Les Diaboliques".
  • Happy Dance: Chuck is seen doing one in "Nothing to Room" before chowing down into a massive plate of food. Earlier, a demon does what it calls "The Happy Freedom Dance" when it thinks it's gotten away from Panty and Stocking by siding the with Demon Sisters.
  • He Cleans Up Nicely: Brief in "Panty + Brief".
  • Heel–Face Turn: Considering the looks on their faces at the end of "Bitch Girls: 2 Bitch", possibly Scanty and Kneesocks, to fight against the now-evil Stocking and Corset.
  • Hero Insurance: Although whatever policy they have (apparently with Garterbelt Insurance Co.) isn't total coverage - "The Stripping" briefly mentions that the destruction they cause to the city is one of the reasons for their debt (although their consumption of luxury goods is stated as the main reason).
  • Heroic BSoD: Out of all characters you wouldn't expect to get one, Panty gets hit hard in "Panty + Brief" after not only being rejected from heaven, but losing all her powers, her halo, regaining her virginity and having her love interest kidnapped right in front of her without being able to do anything about it.
  • Heroic Comedic Sociopath: A significant portion of the humor comes from the main characters constantly proving themselves to be terrible people.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Subverted in "...of the Dead", when a Zombie Infectee takes too long requesting that his life story be novelized , with nothing more than three pages of notes. He turns into a zombie right after he kicks down the door to leave, allowing the horde to run into the building and infect most of the people inside.
  • Hidden Track: Present in the OST confirming the existence of a second season.
  • Hitchhiker's Leg: In the D-City Rock music video, there's a segment where the girls get stranded in the desert and are unable to hitch a ride - until they strip down to nothing but signs that say "Go to D-City".
  • Hollywood Acid: Hell's Monkey spews semen that melts the surrounding city.
  • Horns of Villainy: Sported by Scanty and Kneesocks since they're the demonic Evil Counterparts to Panty and Stocking.
  • Hot-Blooded: Panty, Garterbelt, and Fast-But-Not-So-Furious in "Death Race 2010".
  • Human Resources: Sanitarybox's "Brothers of the Round Head". Watch at your own risk.
  • Humiliation Conga: "Panty + Brief" and the beginning of "Bitch Girls" is one huge conga for Panty.
  • Hurricane of Puns: The dub opens the series with one - Garterbelt makes a flurry of poop puns.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Stocking calls Scanty and Kneesocks perverted women (hentai onna). Crunchyroll translated the line as "bondage-loving skanks". Ironically, she enjoys bondage.
  • I Call It "Vera": Panty's gun "Backlace", Stocking's sword "Stripe", and the car named "See-Through".
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Brief is lovestricken with Panty. In spite of this, he invites her to a party so she can get her final tally.
  • I Was Quite a Looker:
    • Garterbelt when he was younger.
    • Granny in "Bitch Girls".
  • I'm Taking Her Home with Me!: Stocking's reaction to the Sperm Ghosts.
  • Ignored Enemy: Briefly in "Catfight Club", where the Ghost tries to attack but the ball he uses as a weapon is repeatedly knocked away by a bickering Panty and Stocking as they argue.
  • The Immodest Orgasm: Used in the background tracks "Pantscada" and "Juice", both courtesy of Panty. Can also be heard in almost every episode that Panty has sex in.
  • Immortality:
  • Implausible Fencing Powers: Both Stocking and Kneesocks are able to pull off incredible feats of destruction with their swords and scythes.
  • Imported Alien Phlebotinum: "Trans-homers" only happened because Stocking (and then Panty) decided to eat the hearts of the totally-not-Optimus-and-Megatron that conveniently crashed into the church. Strangely, their usual Transformation Sequence is all that it takes to change back.
  • Improvised Weapon: In "...of the Dead", Stocking impales a zombified cat with a vibrator.
  • In the Name of the Moon:
    • In another first, the speech is recited while performing a pole dance:
O wicked spirit born of a lost soul in limbo; receive judgment from the garb of the Holy Virgin; cleansed of worldly impurities; return to Heaven and Earth. Repent, MOTHERFUCKERS!
    • Subverted in "Trans-homers" when they completely screw up the chant and just start screaming instead.
    • Scanty and Kneesocks have their own version:
Break, o earth; dry up, o sea; burn out, o sun; grant us power earthly leaders and gatekeepers of Hell. Guide us, makers of the Underworld! We are High-class demon commanders! I'm Scanty! And I'm her darling little sister, Kneesocks!
  • Incest Subtext: Scanty and Kneesocks' Erotic Eating in "D.C. Confidential".
  • Ineffectual Sympathetic Villain: invoked It's clear that the demon sisters are much more popular with the public than the angels. Then again, the angels frequently destroy the chunks of the city and all their money likely comes out of the citizens' pockets.
  • Instant Humiliation: Just Add YouTube!: Invoked by Stocking in retaliation to Panty, who deleted all her scenes in Sex and the Daten City. She uploads Panty's porno online, which eventually leads to Brief jacking off to it.
  • Intentionally Awkward Title: Aside from the series' title, there's also the songs "Technodildo", "Beverly Hills Cock" and "Dance Floor Orgy", and the subtitles to the "Cherry Corrida" drama tracks on The Worst Album.
  • Irony:
    • The two angels' primary character flaws are two of the Seven Deadly Sins; Lust and Gluttony.
    • Scanty and Kneesocks are much more orderly than the two chaotic angels.
  • It Only Works Once: Corset's panic implies this to be the case with Brief's orgasm unlocking the Hellsgate, but it's probably not so if Corset expects Brief to open Oten City's gate next season.
  • Jerkass:
    • Both girls are usually complete dicks to just about everyone they meet. This is marginally averted, however, in the sense that Panty has shown instances where she really does care about her sister ("Ghost: The Phantom of Daten City" and the end of "Catfight Club" come to mind) and has occasionally stuck up for her.
    • The Ghost that Stocking falls in love with in "Ghost: The Phantom of Daten City" treats her like crap. By the end of the episode, though, he's a Jerk with a Heart of Gold.
  • Juggling Loaded Guns: In "High School Nudical", Panty's gun stops working, so she turns it around, peers into the barrel, and pulls the trigger several times.
  • Lampshade Hanging: In "Excretion Without Honor and Humanity":
Police Chief: What? You mean the ho bag covered in shit? And the goth with the stupidly long hair?
  • Laughing Mad: Stocking in "The Diet Syndrome".
  • Lawyer-Friendly Cameo: The Prosecutor from "1 Angry Ghost" is only slightly wilder than the real "Tom Croose" in "Magnolia".
  • Le Film Artistique: "Chuck to the Future, Part 3".
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall:
    • Before their Transformation Sequence in front of the camera in "1 Angry Ghost":
Stocking: Can they show this on TV?
    • In "Vomiting Point," Terao actually hears "Fly Away Now" playing when Panty and Stocking arrive.
    • In "Les Diaboliques", when Panty and Stocking challenge Scanty and Kneesocks for control of the school, a giant "vs." appears between the two, which Kneesocks promptly throws away.
    • At the end of "Les Diaboliques", while on the roof of the school, Stocking deflects a group of bullets from Scanty's gun. The scene then cuts to a slow-motion effect of all the bullets bouncing off the floor and back to Scanty and Kneesocks' weapons. All except one, that is, which deflects upward and bounces literally off the top of the screen back down to the two demons.
  • Leave the Camera Running: The episode "Nothing to Room" is essentially a continuous 13 minute shot of Panty and Stocking watching TV and talking while waiting for Garterbelt to finish cooking lunch. There is only one camera move, and a couple of variants on the Whip Pan to show the passage of time.
  • Left the Background Music On: In "Vomiting Point", the angels' transformation leitmotif starts playing before they actually arrive and Terao looks around in confusion as if he can hear it.
  • Lemony Narrator: The narrator in "Trans-homers":
"I'm sorry, what show am I narrating again?"
    "OH NO SHE DI'INT!"
  • Limited Animation: "If Angels Wore Swimsuits" has the same strangely low quality animation compared to the rest of the series.note
  • Limited Wardrobe:
    • Subverted. Although the opening, promotional materials, and the first mini-episode all portray Panty and Stocking with the same outfits, the girls actually wear different clothes in each mini-episode. They also occasionally re-wearing outfits from previous episodes, including their original outfits.
    • Played straight by Scanty and Kneesocks who, when not at the beach or in disguise, always wear their dress uniforms.
  • Little Useless Gun: "High School Nudical" has Panty needing to borrow other people's underwear to summon a weapon after the ghost steals her own. All the boys in the entire school have tiny dicks, resulting in tiny, useless guns. She's rewarded with a shotgun when she grabs Brief's as a last resort...
  • Long Song, Short Scene: Several. This is particularly notable in the case of the three Power Up Theme Music tracks:
    • "Fly Away" is much longer than the show ever uses it for and actually does have lyrics besides "Fly away now!"
    • The mix of "Theme for Scanty & Knee Socks" on the OST is different from the show's; the show's cut used actual (or well-sampled, anyway) pipe organ, whereas the OST cut uses a synthesized instrument that sounds like a clarinet, if anything. Sure, it's not bad by any means, but it's a bit of a waste. The "take it down and turn it up!" lyric also shows up in different places and at different speeds on either cut. The TV cut appears on the bonus soundtrack included with the special edition of volume 4, though, so it's all good.
    • "Corset Theme" plays for about 20 seconds in Episode 13, directly before the girls' Theme Music Power-Up. The full song goes for a full 4:35, has short vocals, and is really catchy.
  • Lost in Translation:
    • A minor example: Episode 7-A is officially titled "Transwhorers", but the dub titled it as "Trans-homers," losing some of the verbal wordplay since it doesn't quite rhyme with "Transformers," although the original joke makes sense in either language.
    • In the subbed version, there's a quick gag directly translated with no context—Panty burps after eating clam chowder, and Stocking teases her by saying it smells like squid. In Japan, it's commonly held that semen smells like squid.
  • Love at First Sight: While it's usually lust at first sight for Panty with the sole exception of Brief, Stocking falls in love with a ugly (in appearance and behavior and personality initially) Ghost in "Ghost: The Phantom of Daten City". May also be a case of Freaky Is Cool on Stocking's part.
  • Love Martyr: Stocking in regards to a repugnant, ugly, broke, smelly, freeloading, constantly farting Ghostnote  in "Ghost: The Phantom of Daten City". She even ditches her usual black and blue Elegant Gothic Lolita look for a pink-overload version and plans to run away with him.
  • Lovely Angels: Quite literally. Obviously tipping their hats halos to the original pair.
  • Macho Camp: Garterbelt. Examples include:
    • He organized an underwear-run in "High School Nudical" just for the sake of looking at young men's junk.
    • In "Trans-homers", a (male) robot is seen running away from some kind of portable bathroom, and then Garterbelt comes out while he is adjusting his pants.
    • He is shown masturbating to magazines of muscular men.
    • It turns out that he following a mission from God to find a MacGuffin that happened to be someone's dick.
  • Macross Missile Massacre: With bees and police cars.
  • Made of Bologna: The stinger has Panty cut into 666 pieces by Stocking's katana. Each piece seems to be made of pink bologna.
  • Made of Iron: Everyone. Chuck is the most noticeable example.
  • Made of Plasticine: Chuck gets smashed to bits a lot. However, he always gets better.
  • Magical Girl: The series plays like a cracked-out parody of Magical Girl shows.
  • Makes Just as Much Sense in Context: The entire series is this due to the premise.
  • Man Behind the Man: Corset, the mayor of Daten City.
  • The Man in the Moon: It has a face and sneezes.
  • Mandatory Twist Ending: This is a Gainax series. Specifically, Stocking cuts Panty into numerous pieces, revealing she was evil all along.
  • Marshmallow Hell: This happens to the jocks picking on Brief in "High School Nudical" after being hit by Panty and Stocking's car. Complete with Angelic Chorus sound effect.
  • Masturbation Means Sexual Frustration:
  • Meaningful Name: invoked
    • Their given names aside, Panty and Stocking's surname is Anarchy. Taking into account how much mess they're making in the city, and that their main antagonists are the RRRUUURRRUUU-obsessed Scanty and Kneesocks, it's quite accurate.
    • Considering the clothing theme, Anarchy when written as "anaaki" is phonetically close to "anaaki", which means "perforated", "drilled", "pierced", or "hollow".
    • Daten City, which sits on the border between heaven and hell, puns on "datenshi", which means "fallen angel".
  • Medium Awareness:
    • When Stocking and Chuck drive off to fight ghosts in "Catfight Club", Chuck is saying his name so much that the screen fills up with numerous "Chuk" Written Sound Effects on screen. Stocking gathers them up in one swipe and shoves them back down Chuck's throat, which he then swallows.
    • When the Anarchy and Daemon sisters tried to start a fight, Kneesocks grabs the VS splash screen and throws it away.
  • Medium Blending:
    • When the Monster of the Week goes kaboom, the resulting explosion is an obvious live-action model being blown up, in the style of Kaiju/Tokusatsu.
    • The Wave-Motion Gun Panty and Stocking fire in the finale summons their mother, a gigantic live-action woman in white lacy lingerie.
  • Meganekko: Kneesocks. This is most noticeable during her and Scanty's transformation sequence when the Art Shift takes place.
  • Microwave the Dog: A swarm of flies force Chuck into a microwave in "Chuck to the Future". Chuck's indestructibility reforms him after the resultant explosion.
  • Mind Screw: "Chuck to the Future, Part 3" is presumably a parody of arthouse films, because it's in grayscale, starts off making no sense, and just keeps getting more confusing.
  • Mini Dress Of Power: Often their outfit of choice. For Panty, it's basically a necessity because she has to be able to slip off her underwear in the heat of battle (Magic Skirt and Scenery Censor then apply).
  • Mirror Match: Despite being polar opposites in terms of personality, Panty and Stocking vs. Scanty and Kneesocks becomes this. Panty even borrows Stocking's panties in order to dual wield like Scanty.
  • Mirror Routine: Fastener plays this on Chuck in "Chuck to the Future".
  • Modesty Bedsheet: Quite frequently with Panty.
  • The Mole: At the last possible second, it's revealed that Stocking is actually a demon.
  • Monster of the Week: Though somewhat more outlandish than usual.
  • Mood Whiplash:
    • "The Vomiting Point". Works with the Art Shift.
    • "Ghost: The Phantom of Daten City" is far more tragic than you're initially led to believe.
    • In "Panty + Brief", a romantic moment between Panty and Brief is finally shown and they decide to make love. Sadly, the moment is spoiled due to the discovery that Panty can no longer have sex due to her regaining her hymen and, somehow, her virginity.
  • More Dakka:
    • The Daten City Police Department figured more guns would beget more chance of bringing down the speed demon.
    • Panty and Scanty in "Les Diaboliques". Destroying a lot of toilets in the process.
  • Multiboobage: The Ghost in "The Diet Syndrome".
  • Mundane Made Awesome:
    • Using nose picking as a metaphor for sex.
    • Angels vs. Demons in a match of volleyball in "If The Angels Wore Swimsuits". It eventually escalates to the point where both sides are forced to use their powers.
    • Sperm fertilizing an egg has a lot in common with D-Day.
  • Mundane Utility: "Ghost: The Phantom of Daten City" features Stocking using Stripes to cut crust off a sandwich. And then to abuse Chuck some more.
  • Musical Spoiler: The OST revealed Corset's real name about a couple of weeks before the show did.
  • My Friends... and Zoidberg: In the second episode, Garterbelt addresses the pair as "Ladies and Panty".

    Tropes N to Z
  • Name and Name: This is featured in the title.
  • Negative Continuity: Everyone dies or becomes zombified in "...of the Dead". This is completely disregarded by the second half of the episode. It's inconsistently applied elsewhere.
  • Nemesis Weapon: Panty disposes of demons with pristine white bullets fired from her divine handgun. Her Evil Counterpart Scanty's firearms discharge matte black bullets. As seen in the episode "Les Diaboliques," the diametric projectiles seek each other out mid-flight, resulting in mutual annihilation. Similarly, Stocking's twin katanas can slice through anything, including an entire tractor-trailer, but are blunted against Kneesock's twin scythes.
  • New Job Episode: "The Stripping" forces Panty and Stocking through different part time jobs.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero:
  • Night of the Living Mooks: The episode "...of the Dead".
  • Nipple and Dimed: The cake ghost. She has nipple eyes too.
  • No-Dialogue Episode: The "Chuck to the Future" trilogy, other than replaying some of Garterbelt's lines from the point where things branch off, contains no dialogue (beyond Chuck and Fastener's Pokémon Speak). The demon-girl-brain thingy says, "Well, this is awkward..." and that's it.
  • No-Tell Motel: It's blatantly labeled as such on the sign.
  • Noblewoman's Laugh:
    • In the Beach Episode, Panty and Stocking do a variation, though it's less "Yo ho ho ho ho ho!" and more "Pu pu pu pu pu".
    • Stocking does a crazed variation in "The Diet Syndrome" to indicate that dieting is driving her batshit insane. Monica Rial very intentionally pulls off Renge's infamous laugh for this scene in the dub.
    • Pulled by Scanty and Kneesocks, who start sounding like howling baboons in short order.
  • Nobody Poops: Subverted as several characters are seen going to bathroom:
    • Panty is clearly seen taking a dump in "Excretion without Honor and Humanity" and the episode's Ghost is a conglomerate of feces that sucks people down toilets.
    • Stocking is seen on the toilet in "The Turmoil of the Beehive".
    • In "Les Diaboliques," Panty and Stocking have a whole conversation while both are sitting on the toilet in neighboring stalls.
    • In "Trans-homers", Panty deliberately spends ages on the toilet to spite Stocking, who desperately needs to go. What makes this even more bizarre is that both are in their robot forms at the time.
    • In "Inner Brief", Garterbelt makes Brief chug an entire bottle of laxative.
  • Non-Indicative Title:
  • Noodle Incident: It isn't revealed what "that little incident" was the last time Garterbelt and Corset met before the series began, though it did seem to leave some kind of huge yellow cross-shaped scar on both of their chests, which mirror each other's.
  • No Periods, Period: In chapter 7 of the manga, Panty's and Stocking's cycles overlap.
  • Nosebleed:
    • Used in "The Runny" to propel a blimp into the moon. It's a long story.
    • Brief gets one now and then, most noticeably when finds out that Panty's ear is an erogenous zone. Considering the series being very ecchi, it is used very rarely though.
  • Not Really a Birth Scene: It features Brief passing a miniature Panty and Stocking through his digestive system. Garterbelt decides to treat the process as if it were a birth, stirrups and all.
  • Not So Above It All: In "The Runny", Panty manages to get a nosebleed out of Garterbelt, of all people.
  • Nuclear Candle: In "Once Upon a Time in Garterbelt", Stocking activates one of these by striking a match against Panty's cheek. It instantly illuminates the trap-filled catacomb that they were traveling through. It eventually burns out and the room goes back to pitch darkness, just as they were about to face the final guardian of Garterbelt's secrets.
  • Number of the Beast:
    • In "Panty + Brief", when Panty explains she has planned to have sex with 1000 men before returning to heaven, a band that shows numbers from 001 to 1000 is bent at 666.
    • In "...of the Dead", the roadsign to the zombie-infested city the trio are going to reads at the bottom: "Pop(ulation): 666".
    • The number of pieces there are of Panty after Episode 13.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: Garterbelt's battle with zombie Panty and Stocking isn't shown.
  • Ominous Pipe Organ: Used in Scanty and Kneesocks' themes.
  • One-Winged Angel: In the last episode, Chuck turns into a giant hellhound and Fastener turns into a two-headed dragon. Corset also fuses with the Hellsmonkey.
  • Only Good People May Pass: Heaven is shown as this. In fact, both titular angels were kicked out of there because of their deadly sins (including Lust and Gluttony) and now they have to gain their re-entrance with "Heaven Coins", getting them by destroying Ghosts in Earth and saving people in the process.
  • Opposites Attract: In "Ghost: The Phantom of Daten City", Stocking has a romance with a very gross and ugly ghost.
  • Order Versus Chaos: invoked In this case, the underlying theme to the Anarchy sisters versus the Daemon sisters. The demons, Scanty and Kneesocks, are huge sticklers for propriety, orderly behavior and following the rules, even though they are also evil demons out to foster ghosts all over Daten City, giving them a very strong Lawful Evil vibe. The angels, Panty and Stocking, in comparison, are selfish, anarchistic, unpredictable, perverse, hedonistic and casually violent, to the point where it's a recurring gag that the Daemon sisters are aghast at or horrified by their behavior, which goes well beyond Chaotic Good and into Chaotic Neutral. A comparatively rare case where the Chaos side is the heroic side. In theory, anyway.
  • Our Angels Are Different: Panty and Stocking are very crude, lustful, and destructive.
  • Our Demons Are Different: Scanty and Kneesocks are the very opposite of Panty and Stocking.
  • Our Ghosts Are Different: The ghosts takes on all shapes and forms and they explode when they are killed by Panty and Stocking.
  • Panty Thief: Super Speedo Star from "High School Nudical" steals and eats panties.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise:
    • Master G is definitely not Garterbelt. No siree.
    • Any similarities you see between Kneesocks and the mustachioed red roulette dealer are entirely coincidental:
      "You're face is quite red..."
  • Parallel Porn Titles: Considering the nature of this series, most of the episode names count as both.
  • Pathetic Drooping Weapon: Panty, using her superpower to transform underwear into guns in "High School Nudical", where her panties get stolen by the Monster of the Week during the Lingerie Run, steals the underwear of all the teenage boys. Nearly all of them turn into tiny guns, except Brief's, which turns into a massive pump action shotgun. It is strong enough to defeat the Ghost, but goes limp and floppy after a single shot.
Panty: Man, turns soft and useless so quick, just like its owner!
  • Performance Video: "Help! We are Angels".
  • Phenotype Stereotype: Garterbelt. Not only is he portrayed with large lips and a Funny Afro, but during the opening credits, when X-rays reveal the brains and skeletons of the rest of the cast, his X-ray comes up entirely black. His Death Glare that freaks Chuck out also makes him look very much like a Scary Black Man.
  • Phlebotinum Breakdown: Notable examples are See-Through running out of gas just when Panty needs to drive away at the most important time and Stocking's swords breaking while trying to slice through Super Speedo Star.
  • Pizza Boy Special Delivery: In "Excretion Without Honor and Humanity", Panty and Stocking come across a woman flirting with a plumber, and after mistaking the latter for a ghost, Panty, being the Lovable Sex Maniac she is, decides to have sex with him.
  • Playboy Bunny: Panty and Stocking dress as this at one point of "The Stripping". Then, after the two switch into more formal clothes to enter the casino, Brief ends up wearing Panty's bunny costume. And never takes it off.
  • Plot Coupon: Collect all the Heaven Coins a boss drops and complain how little it is each time.
  • Police Are Useless:
    • Subverted in "Death Race 2010" where they manage to subdue a demon via ramming it with dozens of police cruisers.
    • They send so much against that Ghost that it looks like they can easily deal with any normal crime throughout the city. They only have trouble against Ghosts and even then they're capable of taking it down by throwing everything they have at it.
  • Pokémon Speak: Chuck and Fastener, though the latter very rarely actually says his full name.
  • Polar Opposite Twins: According to Studio TRIGGER PR guy Tattun, Panty and Stocking are twins.
  • Powersuit Monkey: A Type 2 is featured in "1 Angry Ghost". It becomes a Type 3 after being electrified.
  • Prayer Is a Last Resort: During the final battle, Scanty and Kneesocks are truly terrified of the Hellsmonkey ghost. Scanty starts swearing up a storm, and Kneesocks quickly starts reciting a prayer to God and prattles off the names of Christian figures:
    "Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!"
  • Precision F-Strike:
Scanty: What's wrong with you?! Don't you follow any rules?!!
Panty: Idiot. Rules are made to be broken.
    (Scanty pulls her guns out)
    Scanty: Fuckin' angel!
    • And the above mentioned example from the dub:
      Scanty: Holy motherfucking GODAMMIT SHIT!
  • Pre-Climax Climax: The sex scene between Brief and Panty occurs one episode before the actual pre-climax but it's more or less the same.
  • Premiseville: Daten City. "Datenshi" is Japanese for "fallen angel".
  • Pretty Boy: Brief(ers Rock) turns out to be this once Panty is actually able to get a good look at his face.
  • The Psycho Rangers: "Les Diaboliques" introduces Scanty and Kneesocks, devil sisters with astoundingly similar fighting ability. Their leader, the mayor of Daten City, corresponds to Garterbelt, and their pet Fastener to Chuck.
  • Putting on the Reich: Scanty and Kneesocks outfit of choice is a dress uniform complete with arm band, which they impose on the entire school in "Les Diaboliques".
  • A Rare Sentence: In the dub, Stocking makes fun of Panty several times this way:
    • In "Death Race 2010", when the ghost is licking the panties stuck on its head:
Panty: Stop licking that right now!
Stocking: Bet you never said that before.
    • In "Les Diaboliques", after a tiny ghost the two are chasing flees into a toilet:
Panty: Fuck that, I'm not sticking my fist in there.
Stocking: Not often you get to say that.
      Panty: Well played, hooker.note
    • In "Nothing to Room", Panty calls it out herself:
Stocking: Seriously, go dry-hump something! I'm too hungry to deal with your shit!
Panty: I never thought I'd say this, but I'm too hungry to dry-hump anything!
    • And one version not from Panty or Stocking, but from Brief:
Brief: Um, I just screwed Hell's keyhole!
  • The Real Spoofbusters: Brief wears a green jumpsuit and carries around a backpack that doubles as a vacuum cleaner throughout most of the series. The shout-out is intentional.
  • Reality Is Out to Lunch: The series deals with angels, ghosts, and demons.
  • Recap Episode: "D.C. Confidential".
  • Recycled In SPACE: Referenced in a secret track on the soundtrack announcing season 2. Panty hopes the seasons keep coming until they make "PANTY IN THE SPACE!"
  • Red and Black and Evil All Over: The ghosts are black with red outlines.
  • Red Herring: The farm skit in "Bitch Girls" is intended to fool certain viewers into believing a larger Time Skip has occurred. Granny, who shows up with the same dress color and facial features as Panty's, is suggested to be Panty having grown old as a result of her mortality, while the real Panty is implied to be Panty Sr.'s relation or a child who happens to bear an uncanny semblance to Panty Sr. This illusion is promptly broken after Brief is shown not to have aged one bit and the whole scene is revealed to be a mere act planned out by Garterbelt to motivate Panty to rescue Brief.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni:
    • Panty's the red, Stocking's the blue. Heck, their trademark outfits practically color code them.
    • Although they're both pretty blue relative to either of the angel sisters, Scanty is more excitable and emotional than Kneesocks.
  • Refuge in Audacity: Garterbelt actually did take refuge at one point in his life as a member of the Ku Klux Klan.
  • Retraux: "Chuck to the Future, Part 4" from the Sanitarybox shorts. Watch as 8-bit Chuck paces through an overly sexualized version of Super Mario Bros..
  • Rewind Gag: At the end of Episode 13, Garterbelt unexplodes thanks to God.
    Garterbelt: GODDDD MYYYYY OOOHHHHH!!
  • Ridiculous Exchange Rates: When the Monster of the Week in "Trans-homers" is defeated, the cast is drowning in heaven coins. But Garterbelt soon notices that these are "foreign heaven coins" and as good as worthless.
  • Roof Hopping: Only used in "Vomiting Point". Usually they drive by car to get from A to B.
  • Rule of Cool: Why yes.
  • Rule of Funny: Hell yes.
  • Rule of Sexy: Oh yes.
  • Running Gag: Brief is always on the receiving end of a Dynamic Entry by the Demon Sister's rolling red carpet.
    • "Fuckin' A!"
  • Sadist Show: invoked Everyone gets seriously injured at some point or another. It's always played for laughs.
  • Saved by the Church Bell: When this pair of angels defeat the demon of the week, their victory is celebrated by the chiming of the church bell. That church is also their headquarters, living space, and where they receive their assignments. Later episodes tend to skip this chiming.
  • Scenery Censor: Considering a lead character uses her easily removable panties as a handgun, this is necessary to keep from crossing the line straight into NSFW territory:
    • As a sample, the whole of "Death Race 2010". Panty crashes into some sort of toy store and loses her panties (and by extension, her weapon). Immediately after, she sees them on the head of the Ghost they're fighting. Everyone, even the news crew got several upskirt shots, gets an eyeful, not that she seems to care. The viewers, however, get nothing. Her "naughty bits" are covered by her thighs, or her boots, or in one instance, light reflecting off the camera lens.
    • In "The Runny", Panty ends up naked below the waist (because it was the one day she wasn't wearing a skirt), the only thing stopping the viewers from getting an eyeful a Censor Box... But NOT the passengers of the blimp the angels were fighting the Ghost in; the sight sent all men and women into a single, explosive, simultaneous Nosebleed... That also happened to dramatically advance the Ghost's plot to ram the blimp into the moon.
    • Panty's breasts are covered up by a dollar bill and coins for a blink-and-you'll-miss-it scene in "The Stripping".
    • Lampshaded in "If the Angels Wore Swimsuits". The men in the audience notice that Panty's bikini just got sliced off by a ghost crab, and wait in anticipation to see her naked, but a few other ghost sea creatures immediately cover her up:
Men: SHIT! STUPID FUCKING STARFISH! FUCK! STUPID SEA URCHIN!
    • Averted in "High School Nudical". Panty has her panties stolen by a underwear-eating Ghost, and therefore keeps running with an unrealistically stretched bra which covers also her lower bits. However, at a certain point, she stares in anger and incredulity at the ghost escaping yet again... and the bra goes back to its normal size, showing her naked (which actually amounts to nothing due to the combination of distance and the stylized art of the show).
    • Averted in "Pulp Addiction". The whole episode is about masturbation. In a scene where the army is trying to get up to a mountain, a censored bar appears over the mountain on two different angles. However, in the third angle, it is uncensored and is a vagina with pubic hair. The English dub gets rid of the censor entirely.
  • The Schlub Pub Seduction Deduction: Averted in "Ghosts: Phantom of Daten City". Stocking just has really bad taste in guys.
  • Secretly Wealthy: Brief(ers Rock). This is foreshadowed when he bought Panty's panties for at least $200,000 on the internet.
  • Seinfeldian Conversation: "Nothing to Room" involves the girls mostly just talking about nothing important.
  • Self-Deprecation: The Mayor's response to the report on Fast-But-Not-So-Furious:
"So there was a noticeable lack of intelligence in that plot..."
  • Self-Destruct Mechanism: In "If Angels Wore Swimsuits", Scanty gets so infuriated after losing to Panty and Stocking that she slams her fist down on a console. Kneesocks screams out that she hit the self-destruct button. An Ash Faced Kneesocks immediately lampshades it afterward:
"What is the point of that button? Who would actually use it?"
  • Sequel Hook: The series has a huge cliffhanger at the end of the show of Stocking killing Panty before claiming that she's actually a demon. Given the show's nature and how long it took to get a Season 2, it remains to be seen if it ends up happening.
  • Sex God: Panty naturally is a case of this, with many men having highly positive comments about her techniques, but Stocking herself is claimed to be this in "Catfight Club" where she says that she's even better at sex then Panty from a guy they both banged.
  • Sex Miseducation Class: Parodied in the episode "The Turmoil of the Beehive", where the pair attend a sex education class at school. Their teacher claims that having sex will cause you to die, even if you wear a condom, and doesn't make any comment when Panty mistakes a condom for bubblegum and manages to blow a bubble using it.
  • Sexy Whatever Outfit: Panty and Stocking's transformation outfits may at first seem like good clothes for a female Greek divinity, but the two managed to make them work as stripper outfits.
  • Shmuck Bait: The commentary found on the dub's extras mentions how they had to explain the definition of a certain exceptionally vulgar slang term to some actors. The word is even spelled out and they recommend that you google it to find out what it means. Don't say we didn't warn you.
  • Shoot the Bullet: Panty and Scanty end up cancelling the majority of each other's bullets by shooting them out.
  • Shout-Out: Has its own page.
  • Sibling Team: Panty and Stocking Anarchy and Scanty and Kneesocks Demon.
  • Sibling Yin-Yang: Panty and Stocking are constantly at each other's throats. They may be sisters, but they have very little in common. And then comes The Stinger...
  • Signature Team Transport: See-Through (pimped-out Hummer) is this for the Anarchy Sisters, and G-String (Mercedes limo) for the Demon Sisters.
  • Silly Simian: The angels' defense attorney in "1 Angry Ghost" is a literal monkey. The episode demonstrates that he's actually fairly competent and more intelligent than the girls, even if he can't fully control his nature.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: Many of the characters, in both Japanese and English, have dropped enough F-bombs to be considered a war crime. Panty, in particular, deserves the title of "Madame Swears-A-Lot".
  • Sitcom Archnemesis: Scanty and Kneesocks, when they focus on Zany Schemes.
  • Skewed Priorities: the M.O. of Panty and Stocking when it comes to Ghost extermination. "Once Upon a Time in Garterbelt" is an excellent example—the two angels are chastized for shirking their duties and letting Ghosts run around willy-nilly, but their only concern is learning Garterbelt's juicy secrets so he doesn't complain about it anymore, rather than just making him do Ghost cleanup himself or anything.
  • Sliding Scale of Silliness vs. Seriousness: The series can slide across both spectrums, but mostly resides on the silly part.
  • The Slow Path: After death, Garterbelt was sent back to the time of the dinosaurs as an immortal by God and forced to witness the evolution of mankind first-hand as a punishment for crimes committed.
  • Slut-Shaming: Stocking and Garterbelt's usual way of dealing with Panty. Panty doesn't really care.
  • Snap Back: "...of the Dead" ends with everyone but Garterbelt being turned into a zombie, with Panty and Stocking noticing that they probably won't end up reverting back to normal. The next episode, everything is back to normal with no explanation. The recap episode even shows that the zombie apocalypse really did happen.
  • Snot Bubble: Panty and Chuck are seen with these the most often, especially in "Pulp Addiction" when they're bored out of their minds.
  • Snow Means Death: It happens in "Ghost: The Phantom of Daten City" when the ghost goes to heaven when he finally falls in love.
  • Snow Means Love: This is featured in "Ghost: The Phantom of Daten City" when the ghost proposes to Stocking.
  • Something Else Also Rises: Garterbelt's afro expands in size when he gets, er, frustrated. It eventually explodes from the pressure.
  • Sophisticated as Hell: See the quote at the top of the page. Transposing prayers with Hot-Blooded swearing fits in perfectly with the rest of the show.
  • Sore Loser: Scanty and Kneesocks in "If the Angels Wore Swimsuits". Not only do they refuse to follow through on their end of the bet when they're beaten in a volleyball game (stripping naked in front of the crowd), but they sic a horde of monsters on Panty, Stocking, and the beachgoers and swiftly drive off.
  • Soundtrack Dissonance: The ending theme features visuals of Super-Deformed bobblehead versions of Panty and Stocking amongst deadly situations (such as falling off a cliff on See-Through or being eaten by a monster), all while the peaceful and slightly upbeat dream pop/synthpop song "Fallen Angel" plays.
  • Spanner in the Works: In "The Stripping", Scanty and Kneesocks are running a casino in order to feed a money ghost and make it more powerful. This seems to be working quite well, until the two heroines show up and have copious amounts of dumb luck. Not even Kneesocks stepping in and rigging the roulette wheel further can save them once they start selling their own clothes to fuel their gambling addiction.
  • Speed Demon: The eponymously named Speed Demon from "Death Race 2010". He spends most of the episode jumping from vehicle to vehicle while outrunning the cops. Even when he possesses a bullet train, he doesn't think he's going fast enough.
  • Spell My Name with an S:
    • Some scanlations translate Panty's gun as "Backless" or "Black Lace" instead of "Backlace".
    • In a more literal example, Kneesocks's name was often spelled as "Kneesock" for a time on this very page.
  • Spent Shells Shower: Given the More Dakka used by the Daten City Police Department against the speed demon ghost.
  • Sperm as People: One episode has a parody of the D Day landings with a man jacking off with Kleenex. The sperm cells are portrayed as soldiers.
  • Spin to Deflect Stuff: It'll get you through a wall of incoming bee Ghosts.
  • Spiritual Antithesis: To several of Gainax's other works. While several of their works were just as over-the-top, they were also philosophically deep and told a life lesson amidst the chaos. This series, on the other hand, throws all depth out the window and shifts the insanity into maximum overdrive.
  • Spiritual Successor: To Dead Leaves. It explains a lot.
  • Spoof Aesop: "The Diet Syndrome" closing aesop is broken several ways intentionally. Stocking snaps back from the only consequence of her Sweet Tooth after exorcising a fat-inducing ghost. She concludes that self-control is bad for you, and that you should eat all you want... but that only applies to her.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Brief. Throughout the series, he's shown to be masturbating to Panty's sex video, collecting her boogers, spending over $200,000 in an attempt to buy her panties, wearing her discarded clothes, and appears from behind a tree while she and Stocking are talking, implying he's been following her in secret. Despite all this, he tries to keep the sisters from fighting, offers them help in trying to get a job, and when Panty finally offers to have sex with him, he's too nervous to go through with it and would rather take things slow. Of course, he then gets promoted in Episode 12.
  • Standard Snippet:
    • In "Chuck to the Future, Part I", Fryderyk Chopin's "Chanson De'L Adieu" plays when Chuck and Fastener remember their school days together. And in the same episode, after Chuck unzips Fastener's head-zipper and a demon mini-woman walks out and away, the "Funeral March" starts playing, also from Fryderyk Chopin. Cue Chuck's My God, What Have I Done? face.
    • "The Entertainer" plays in "Nothing to Room" when Chuck eats his food in front of Panty and Stocking while they are waiting for food.
    • Symphony No.9 in E Minor from Antonín Dvořák's New World Symphony serves as the background music for Garterbelt's biography exhibition.
  • Starcrossed Lovers: Stocking and the Ghost in "Ghost: The Phantom Of Daten City". It actually ends on a bittersweet note.
  • Stealth Pun:
    • Some of the Ghosts are this; so far we've had a Speed Demon and a Queen Bee.
    • In "High School Nudical", Brief's underpants turn into a shotgun. It's used for a short time before it goes limp. Think about who they belong to for a second.
    • The robot that screws Panty in "Trans-homers". You could say he's a sex bomb.
  • The Stinger: The season finale ends on this to the point that it's practically self-aware.
  • Stripperific: Panty and Stocking's outfit in the Transformation Sequence. This is also the case for Scanty and Kneesocks.
  • Stylistic Suck: With Art Shifts across the quality spectrum. The most screwed up example yet would be the final act of the Sanitarybox shorts, which makes every other Flash animation in the series look vastly superior in comparison.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome:
    • The recently revirginized Panty discovers that having sex with Brief and his Gag Penis only results in a quite painful experience.
    • In one episode, its revealed that Panty and Stocking have to sharp and clean their lingerie so that when they transform the clothing into their guns and swords, the weapons function like they should. However, due to skipping out on weapon maintenace in order to attend an underwear race, Panty's gun jams and Stocking's sword/s break when they have to fight a ghost at the event.
  • Surreal Humor: By the bucketload.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: invoked "Eye of the Tiger" and the Mission: Impossible theme plays in rapid succession in "The Diet Syndrome".
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: Near the end of "Sex and the Daten City", someone asks Panty if that was her first movie. note  Her answer? She says she had never made a movie or porn before. Indeed, she had. But most copies of the porn are destroyed by her, Stocking and Chuck during this episode.
  • Sweets of Temptation: Stocking is completely addicted to sweets. Usually she doesn't suffer any consequences from over-eating them due to being an angel (she claims that all the fat goes to her boobs), but in "The Diet Syndrome," she mysteriously starts to gain weight. She exercises vigorously and even stops eating her favorite sweets, but when she finds out she's somehow gained even more weight, she calls it quits and devours several plates of her favorite Swiss rolls. The next morning, she balloons to a comically enormous size; it turns out the rolls were made by a Ghost who's trying to make everyone fat, created from the despair of obese women who couldn't get thin.
  • Swirlie: Panty and Scanty give each other Swirlies while they fight each other in the school.
  • Switching P.O.V.:
    • In "Vomiting Point", Panty and Stocking are seen from the POV of the average person.
    • The beginning of "Chuck to the Future" shows how he apparently sees the world. Or not.
  • Tasty Gold: Garterbelt bites down on a Heaven Coin that the robot Ghost left behind, confirming its origin, and that it's worthless compared to the coins the girls normally earn.
  • The Talk: Spoofed à la Mean Girls in "The Turmoil of the Beehive".
  • Talking Is a Free Action:
    • The girls' Transformation Sequence is accompanied by a very long incantation. Subverted in "Pulp Addiction" where they simply recite the first line and Panty ends with a "yada yada".
    • Subverted in the finale: Garterbelt is impaled by Corset when he turns to chastise the Anarchy sisters, forgetting he was fighting Corset.
    • The ghost in "Catfight Club" disagrees with this:
"It's impolite to chat when I'm trying to fucking kill you!!"
  • Talking Poo: Big Brown in "Excretion Without Honor and Humanity".
  • The Teapot Pose: One of the very first images the public got of the show had Panty with one arm bent at her waist and the other raised with the hand facing outward. Very befitting of her rude, sarcastic personality.
  • Theme Naming:
    • Every character, object and other is named after undergarments or something related to them.
    • The girls drive a car named See Through.
    • Panty's gun is called Backlace.
  • There Is No Kill Like Overkill: The gang at the beginning of Episode 13 riddles with bullets the farm of Panty's grandma, killing everyone inside but Panty, then sets it on fire, then destroys it with a missile launcher. Averted in the end, because they were just actors playing a part, everyone is alive and well.
  • They Killed Kenny Again:
    • Once an Episode isn't enough; Chuck dies repeatedly. This goes without comment and rarely any notice.
    • Fastener: he's shown lying with a knife embedded in his back in Episode 12, when the Mayor discovers the Demon Sisters doing something together.
    • Panty and Stocking ultimately become zombies in "...of the Dead", which is lampshaded as how they'll "turn back to normal in the morning". Scanty and Kneesocks also end up becoming zombies and Garterbelt appears to have been killed by the zombies, but all are alive by the next episode.
  • Thick-Line Animation: Part of the homage to western animation in general: the characters have thick outlines as part of their character designs.
  • This Is a Drill: In the season finale, Panty and Stocking somehow create a giant drill in order to defeat Corset. They accidentally fire it the wrong way and it pierces the heavens.
  • Throw the Dog a Bone:
    • At the end of "Vomiting Point", Panty and Stocking give Terao an autograph for his daughter's birthday, not that anything else is much better.
    • Episode 13, more or less for the fans: Panty and Brief finally do the deed. In mid-air. About 5000 feet up. Give or take. Of course, Panty goes back to treating Brief the way she usually does (which actually leads to the immediate threat getting worse), but she does stop calling him "Geek Boy".
  • Title Drop: An odd visual example in Episode 13. The angels' "Mom" happens to be wearing panties, stockings, and a garterbelt.
  • Title of the Dead: The episode "...of the Dead".
  • Title Theme Tune:
    • "Panty, Stocking! Panty-Panty-Stocking! Panty, Stocking, oh, Panty, Stocking!" No mention of Garterbelt, oddly enough.
    • The end credits contain an Anime Theme Song, rather than the usual Western instrumental version of the opening theme. Nailed the opening, though.
  • Toilet Humor: Often with actual toilets.
  • Too Hot for TV: This series will never air a single episode on American TV. Due to having borderline NC-17 content, no channel will ever want to pick it up including [adult swim] and Comedy Central. Adult Swim mentioned that there would be no way for the series to get past Standards and Practices without completely bleeping out almost everything and ruining the experience because of it.
  • Too Much Information: English dub only. After making her big entrance and getting mocked for it by Stocking, Barby says that she has "the biggest entrances in the whole school". Panty didn't want to know that about her.
    • Said verbatim by Stocking in "Les Diaboliques."
  • Transformation Is a Free Action: Most of the time it might be justified, since the pole dance is rather distracting. However, in "1 Angry Ghost", the judge interrupts Panty mid-sequence and it shifts back to the series' normal art style.
  • Transformation Sequence: Technically, only the weapons transform (since for their transformation both the main girls and the Demon Sisters instantly change outfits before it happens and once they're done, they're just wearing whatever they were wearing earlier anyway), but it still has the flashiness of a traditional Magical Girl transformation so it counts anyway. To top it off, it takes the Fanservice aspect up a notch by including pole dancing and striptease.
  • Trrrilling Rrrs:
    • In the Japanese version, Scanty and Kneesocks don't say "rules", they say "rrrrrules". This is completely averted in the English dub.
    • Both Panty and Stocking occasionally trilled their Rs, though not nearly as often as the Daemon sisters.
  • Three Shorts: In keeping with the American style of the series. Episode 10 has three (well, more like five), however.
  • Unexpectedly Dark Episode: There's an episode from the viewpoint of a civilian family, an overworked Salaryman who gets chewed out by his boss. It doesn't help that they're drawn much more realistically than the pseudo Powerpuff Girls-style of the show.
  • Unsound Effect:
    • By the fourth episode ("Diet Syndrome"), the sound effects are branching out into unusual territory. "Nice dunk!", for example.
    • "Muffin top." No, seriously. As a sound effect.
    • Episode 5 gives us "Pants On!"
    • "Les Diaboliques" has "red carpet".
    • "SEEEEEEAAAAA WAAAAAAATTTTERRRRRR" in "If the Angels Wore Swimsuits".
    • After Episode 10, they became just too many to be counted. But Chuck's "Pissed Off!" just begs to be mentioned.
    • In "Nothing to Room", there's "a cock sucker", "GOD DAMM!!", "SHUT A FUCK UP, BITCH!!", "fucking door", "suck me!!" and "Fuck You".
  • Unsympathetic Comedy Protagonist: Panty and Stocking could care less about actually doing any work. They only do it because they have to.
  • Unusual Euphemism: Panty can't help it that she has a "Hot Hot Pocket".
  • Vagina Dentata:
    • Fastener (Evil Chuck)'s head, with the oblong shape and that vertical zipper in the middle, has a very suspicious shape...
    • "Trans-homers" features Minge-atron, in contrast with the rather tall Cocktimus Prime.
  • Villain Ball: Scanty and Kneesocks get struck by this for the entirety of Episode 8. "...of the Dead": Starting a Zombie Apocalypse with an army of zombies immune to weapons of both Heaven and Hell and sticking around to enjoy the show results in both of them being zombified. Gets even better in "1 Angry Ghost": Putting the heroines on a Kangaroo Court on murder and expecting them to be too lazy to punch holes in the prosecutor's accusations and manipulating Panty into pissing off both jury and the judge was a workable plan. If not for the fact that their "witness" would flip out and yell proudly "SURE, I DID IT!" when pressed and, you know, for the simple fact that ordinary electric chairs don't work too well on angels! Seriously, when your not-so-bright victims can tell your plan sucks, you have no excuse.
  • Villain Decay: In "Les Diaboliques", Scanty and Kneesocks immediately come down with a case of Team Rocketitis, even go so far as to use a Paper-Thin Disguise for that episode. They eventually regain their status in "Panty + Brief".
  • Villainous Incest: Only shown through Sexy Silhouette, but Scanty and Kneesocks participate in it when they're not busy enacting evil plans or being yelled at by the Mayor.
  • Villains Out Shopping: "If the Angels Wore Swimsuits" has Scanty and Kneesocks out on vacation. Granted, it crashes the Angels' own plans, but it's a coincidence. This is averted by Kneesocks, who planned all along to use instant ghost juice on the ocean to create lots of sea ghosts. Played straight by Scanty, who just wanted to win the volleyball match.
  • Virgin Power: Inverted. Panty needs to lose her hymen to get back her powers as an angel.
  • Visual Innuendo:
    • The beginning of "Death Race 2010".
    • The entirety of "Pulp Addiction", albeit far more blatantly.
    • In "The Diet Syndrome", the Monster of the Week shoots a whole fountain of thick white fluid at the girls, and in retaliation, Stocking swallows all of it. Huh... As if that weren't enough, some of the stuff splatters onto Panty's face while she watches in awe.
    • "High School Nudical" involves Panty taking other guys' underwear and turning them into guns and... Brief's is a shotgun...
    • In "Trans-homers," there's some literal screwing. As in, with screwdrivers.
    • The soundtrack cover depicts Panty and Stocking with drops of white something all over their faces and naked upper bodies. The rest of the art suggests it's actually water, but come on.
  • Visual Pun: The colours of Panty and Stocking's weapons? They're in blue and white.note
  • Vomit Indiscretion Shot:
    • Becomes a running gag in "Excretion Without Honor and Humanity". And it's magenta.
    • The end of "Vomiting Point". Very much.
    • The magenta vomit gag makes a return occasionally.
  • Wave-Motion Gun: Panty and Stocking call one forth by putting together a lot of heaven-sent underwear in Episode 13. Subverted when Panty and Stocking fire it and it turns out they were aiming it backwards. Then double-subverted when the mis-shot summons their mother (Panty takes a guess) who crushes the big bad.
  • Waxing Lyrical: On the blooper reel, Chris Sabat decides to ham it up by doing his opening narration of "...of the Dead" by quoting The Cranberries:
"It's the same old theme since 1916. In your head, in your head they're dying. In your head. In your head. Zombie. ZOMBIE. ZOMBEH!"
  • What Does She See in Him?: No one can understand what Stocking sees in the "Ghost: The Phantom of Daten City".
  • Wham Episode:
    • In Episode 6, it's revealed that there's an overarching plot: Panty and Stocking finally have opponents that can keep up with them, and the mayor is a potential antagonist.
    • Again with Episode 12, where the Big Bad's plan is revealed, and it turns out Brief is a major part of it; not to mention that Stocking has ascended to Heaven without Panty, who has lost her powers as an angel.
    • And once more with Episode 13, where Stocking returns, the Big Bad is seemingly defeated, then Stocking wonders if the Heaven weapons can kill angels. She proceeds to chop Panty into 666 pieces, reveals she's actually a demon, and then leaves with the still alive Big Bad that popped out of Brief's penis.
  • Wham Line:
    • "I wonder what they do to angels?"
    • Alternatively, "I'm sorry. But surprise, I'm actually a demon."
  • What the Hell, Hero?: After being relatively passive to their behavior for the series, Brief really lets the girls have it after their nonchalant reaction to Corset killing Garterbelt. To their credit, neither of them give a crap.
  • When All You Have Is a Hammer…: Pop quiz: It's the Darkest Hour. Your partner in crime-fighting has been Put on a Bus, you've been left depowered, and the friendly neighbourhood Big Bad has kidnapped the closest thing you have to a Love Interest in order to open a gate to Hell with his penis. So, what do you do? If you have any idea what this show has been like previously, you should know that Panty's answer is fuck a guy. The best part? It turns out to be exactly the right thing to do. Well, until it turns out she unwittingly helped the Big Bad open his Hell portal, that is.
  • Wild Take: Done by Brief after Stocking cuts Panty into diced bits.
  • With Catlike Tread: In "The Turmoil of the Beehive", the girls have to infiltrate a school:
Students: Are those celebrities? Are we in a music video?
    Panty: We're angels, dick.
Stocking: Uh, you do know what "incognito" means, right? It's the opposite of that.
  • World of Ham: Most of the characters are pretty hammy.
  • Written Sound Effect: Constantly. The most egregious example being a cocksucker in "Nothing to Room".
  • X-Ray Sparks: Happens to Chuck on a regular basis, and in Episode 8, it happens to Panty and Stocking too.
  • Yank the Dog's Chain:
    • After the battle in "Les Diaboliques", Panty offers to have sex with Brief. But when he chickens out, she changes her mind.
    • In the Beach Episode, Panty offers to let Brief rub suntan oil on her back. Before he can actually calm down and do this, the demon sisters show up.
    • Done again in "Panty + Brief" - Panty and Brief finally decide to have sex together. However, it's too painful for Panty as her hymen has regenerated.
  • You Are Worth Hell:
    • Stocking practically quotes this word for word when proclaiming her willingness to abandon heaven to be with a ghost she loves.
    • In the song "CHOCOLAT" on the OST, the lyrics say "So take me to Heaven or Hell, I don't care."
  • You Can Leave Your Hat On: The transformation scene. Both of Panty and Stocking and of Scanty and Kneesocks.
  • Zerg Rush: This seems to be the police's main tactic for dealing with Ghosts.
  • Zombie Apocalypse: "...of the Dead" centers around this. Keeping with the tradition of the genre, no one makes it through alive, including the heroines.

Garterbelt: ...ahem. Go! Follow the Panty path! Brief and Chuck, be on your way!

What the French Toast?!

In a climactic standoff between the Anarchy sisters and the Daemon sisters, Scanty ends up firing at the angels, only for Stocking to deflect her bullets towards the demons' weapons.

How well does it match the trope?
