Alex Ayuli and Rudy Tambala
Cult alternative pop band formed in London in the mid-1980s and revolving around a creative core of Alex Ayuli and Rudy Tambala. Initially dubbed "the black Jesus and Mary Chain" by critics, they diversified their sound and became influential on the Shoegazing and Dream Pop styles (the latter of which they named as an attempt to describe their own sound). Also part of the MARRS collective which recorded the 1987 hit "Pump Up The Volume". Tambala now leads a Spiritual Successor band, Jübl.
Trope namer for:
- Dream Pop - coined by Alex Ayuli, though it's arguable that they only loosely fitted into the style as it would eventually come to be recognised.
Other tropes relating to A.R.Kane:
- Genre Roulette: Their second album "i" headed off in lots of different directions, from Glam Rock to Baroque Pop.
- Insistent Terminology: "Dream pop" was originally this. They kept using it in interviews, ads, and even on record sleeves, until it caught on.
- Intentionally Awkward Title: "i" - yes, it's lowercase, and more confusingly, the quotation marks are part of the title.
- Shoegazing: Their debut single "When You're Sad", released in 1986, is often considered the Ur-Example or Trope Maker of the genre.
